Known for its international diplomacy, Geneva is the gateway city to the Swiss Alps and contains many international organisations that lend the lake-side city a cosmopolitan flair. It is filled with the best in cuisine, diverse languages and people, and top 5-star hotels.
It's easy to fly in to Geneva Airport, and like the rest of Switzerland, the public transport system is incredibly efficient. And the antique shops and steep, cobbled streets of the Old Town can be explored by foot or bicycle.
Many of the sights are monumental buildings such as the St Pierre Cathedral, but you can escape the chilly winters inside museums and galleries displaying everything from the Renaissance to the Contemporary.
Even if getting out into the wilderness of the Swiss Alps isn’t an option, there’s plenty of nature accessible within the city limits. Parc des Bastions offers tree-lined walks and a game of giant chess and Parc de la Grange is a green space situated on the Lake Geneva promenade. Jet d'Eau, a 140-metre high fountain in the centre of Lake Geneva is beautifully lit at night.
With over 90 hotels available, Booking.com ensures that whether you are travelling for business or pleasure you can experience the best accommodations Geneva has to offer.
Flew in and out of Geneva for our ski trip to Chamonix.
Flew in and out of Geneva for our ski trip to Chamonix. Planned on two days in Geneva at the end of our trip. Which we'd had 1-2 more days to explore. Spent our last day strolling Rue du Rhone and the shops, kids looking for cute outfits and me for a Swiss watch. The food was amazing (Les Amures, for the fondue, and Le Relais de l'Entrecote, for steak frite, which doesn't take reservations, but we showed up 20 minutes until 19:00 and stood in line behind 5 people and got in, the line was still growing when we left 90 minutes later).
We also tried to do a tour at CERN, but they were booked out, so we walked the grounds and exhibits. Book it ahead of time.

Geneva is like a condensed version of Manchester: big buildings, great transport infrastructure, and welcoming people. It is extremely expensive though - 3-4x as much as London, which shocked me.
However it is a bit grotty near the train station (where all the best ethnic food is typically), and I didn't feel totally safe. Interestingly, the RLD felt relatively safe because it was so busy with tourists ogling and locals going about their business. You do get approached by prostitutes but they're friendly enough when you say no so it wasn't anything that made me feel uncomfortable etc.
The parks and gardens are outstanding. I also enjoyed the reptile house near the airport. The coffee and snacks at Boreal are fantastic and they cater for dietary requirements and speak fluent English too, so I spent a lot of time there.
With all this said, Geneva is worthy of a short weekend city break or enjoying a long layover in, but I wouldn't go out of my way to stay there for longer.

The city on the lake front is beautiful. and so are the botanical gardens. The people are helpful and friendly. The pace of the city is measured. Every public convenience and space is superbly designed.
The airport is a joy. Everything works well and on time. Water can be had from the tap. Food is delicious. Public transport is free if you get a pass. You can jump on to any bus, tram, boat or train within the city at no cost. And you can drive or catch a train to Lausanne or Chamonix within an hour. Not sure of night life, because I had no time nor the inclination. But all in all a wonderful city.

Very nice, clean, green city.
Very nice, clean, green city. With many attractions & great views. Patek Philippe Museum is my favourite. And the stunnig Jet d'eau de Genève, of course. But February isn't the right month. April, probably, will be much more enjoyable.

Public transport- hotel provided a pass that allowed unlimited use of trams, trains, buses and water taxis. City is so easy to get around. People are friendly. It is clean and feels safe. The lake is incredible and the short trip to Mont Saleve was easy and highly memorable. Views are amazing. Eating out was more expensive than expected - very hard to find affordable food for a family and used supermarkets most of the time.
The location was the best. You can see the main Geneva (Cornavin) train station and Norte Dame from your room - that is how well located they are. They had a kiosk with drinks. Their restaurant attached to the hotel serves food too. Staff try to help you out a lot with questions and everything possible - really good team! The hotel provided a free travelcard that covered all of our public transport. They gave us free water bottles and mind you water is expensive in Switzerland and in most places they charge you for it.
The staff team at Hotel Angleterre is outstanding! So professional, attentive, courteous ensuring visitors enjoy a fabulous 5* experience in keeping with the ambience of this superb waterfront hotel. The rooms are huge, impeccable and tastefully decorated with ‘turn down’ service. Breakfast was a delicious feast offering the best of Switzerland, while enjoying the wonderful vista of Mont Blanc, Geneva & the Lake. What a find! We simply can’t wait to return. Huge thanks to all the staff for such a fantastic stay!
This hotel is a very good surprise.
First, staff is very kind. I asked for an iron (you know, shirts in suicases) and they brought everything a few moments later.
Best of all: the silence. The road is really quite but no noise at all un the hotel. And the room was large and comfy (coming from Paris, I was not used to such place).
The situation is close enough to the old Geneva and it is easy to find restaurants around.
Nothing to hide, I recomend this place.
Location, as we were overnighting before a 7:00 flight out of Geneva. We arrived too late to get an afternoon lunch in the neighborhood or hotel on the Sunday we’re we traveling, but found it an easy walk to the airport and train station with numerous eateries to choose from. Took the handy hotel shuttle back. Nice having a gym facility. Airport transfer service was superb.
The value I got from my room at Astoria exceeded my expectations given its price range for Geneva standards. The room was clean, warm and kinda cozy. Staff was friendly and helpful. Bonus points for the water boiler with black tea, earl gray and verbena. Even more bonus points for the britannia pub, adjacent to the hotel, which also had friendly staff and really good food!
The staff were friendly especially the check in staffs ; the location was perfect as there is a train stop right in front of the hotel ; the room was great ; and thank you to the government of Switzerland for giving “free transportation ticket “ to all tourist . It is really awesome as it allows tourist to go around free of charge . we don’t mind getting lost at all .
We love this charming hotel, lovely spacious rooms, excellent beds but above all outstanding service and kind staff. They did their best to accommodate our late arrival, kept a table for us at the restaurant past 10 pm, prepared early breakfast, all with a smile. We came back and will be back every time we will pass through Geneva.
The location is very central although not in the best area of Geneva but that makes it good place to be. There is more character. Close to train station and lake. The hotel is very nicely done and the rooms well appointed. The pool and jacuzzi are what makes this hotel and sets it apart from the others in the area.
The location just in front of train station. Very convenient. Just cross the road to reach. I like this hotel. Is comfortable than my 1st hotel in Geneva. Breakfast was good. The staff was friendly & very helping. I will back again for this hotel. I think this is the best stay than others nearest hotel.
The bed was very comfortable and I slept really well. I also really appreciated the access to the business center during my stay. I was able to get some work done.
The hotel is located near a bus stop (1&25). It is easy to get anywhere in Geneva from this bus stop.
I would gladly stay again.
This hotel is near the train station, near Lake Geneva, and the historic town. The shower was very powerful. The facilities are in great condition, and it is very clean. Breakfast was abundant and delicious. Swiss milk is the best. I would stay here again next time I am in Geneva.
The hotel was clean and modern and looked new. The staff was attentive and helpful. The location was great, very close to the train station and Lake Geneva. Plenty of restaurants and shopping nearby. The rooms were pretty standard, but spacious enough and comfortable.
October 4th was my first time in Switzerland, and I really enjoyed my stay in Meininger. The room was as pictured ,and the staff were so friendly, especially Marieva. My kids were superexcited. We look forward to lodging again in the future. Thank you very much!
Great location very close to the lake and not far to the centre
Comfortable
Bedrooms were clean
Staff were friendly
Breakfast was very good, food is expensive in Switzerland so it was nice to have this provided
I felt safe in the area as a solo traveller
The best thing of the hotel was the staff. All of them are attentive and totally able to help you about things regarding your room and tips about where to go in Switzerland and in Geneva. Also, the breakfast is huge and made at that moment.
Such a great hotel. The location is excellent, close to all the sights and the train/bus stations. The staff were excellent, rooms spotless and beds really comfortable. The best hotel I’ve stayed in Switzerland so far.
This is one of the best 5-star hotel in Switzerland. Everything is perfect and attention to details and the kids ( they organize special chocolate name tags and a big surprise) is just absolutely outstanding!
Very well located for a short stopover at Geneva. Near the airport and train station and the bus stop is right next to the hotel so good to visit the city too. Small but well planned rooms. good breakfast.
Pierre was the best receptionist that I meet on this trip to Switzerland. The room was comfortable and the perfect size for me. I really enjoyed my stay in this hotel.
Location near airport but no noise. Close to bus service into Geneva. Hotel gives you free travel card to use during your stay which is great. Room was clean.
