Lovely litte city. Visited in May; understandably the high season will be crowded and overly hot weather. Usually excellent food, but also worth to try restaurants off the most busy city centre. This is a lovely part of Crete, a bit off the beaten path, so it is not marred by the worst aspects of mass tourism, but still affords every convenience for the discerning traveller. The town of Agios Nikolaus is very nice to explore, stretching out over numerous areas including a colorful and lively pedestrian center, long seaside walks in various directions, and lots of shopping streets with bars and restaurants galore. Its unique geographical features mean that you can enjoy, in the center of town, stunning hilltop as well as lakeside and seaside views. As for excursions, Spinalonga Island is a must, along with an afternoon or evening in the nearby village of Kritsa (accessible by bus). A must see. Local People were very friendly. I will definitely rent a car. You can't compare the difference between the rent (Feul included)cost to Taxi fees. Taxi fee from Heraklion to Agios Nicolaos 85 euro ( one way) With 170 Euro, you can Rent a car for many days ( 20Euro per day ) off cours + fuel. Taxis are just out off line in Greece ( My opinion )

Really enjoyed our stay at Agios Nikolaos, which we used as a base to visit Elounda and Plaka where we took the boat over to Spinalonga Island. We explored Knossos Palace and the surrounding area. Ag Nik has plenty to offer - great places to eat, lots of shops and lovely views of the harbour and lake especially at night. Stayed in an apartment/hotel which was perfect for our stay - only downside is there are a lot of steps to climb down to the town - but well worth it! ⭐️TrishUnited Kingdom - 10Scored 10
I've been to Ag Nik about 15 times and totally love it.
I've been to Ag Nik about 15 times and totally love it. The town is lovely with lots of wonderful restaurants, bars and shops. It never feels particularly busy either. If you have a car then you can visit some truly magnificent beaches and villages. Ammoudi Beach and Amoudara Beach are great. Take a drive out to Elounda town for more places to eat and drink. For a wonderful dinner in Ag Nik visit Pelagos restaurant - it's fantastic! It's an easy drive from the Airport to Ag Nik as well. Make sure you eat at one of the many lakeside restaurants. The lake is gorgeous at night time. Make sure you go on a boat ride out to the Blue Lagoon - it's totally worth it.

We were absolutely stunned by the cleanliness and accuracy of this apartment! The interior is almost new, technical facilities just perfect (working satellite TV - the only one we found all over crete :)! When we arrived, we found fresh fruits and self made cookies in the apartment. When we left, we recieved self made quince jam and a portion of olive oil - just amazing! Chrisa is a superhost: warm-hearted, full of tipps and always available.

The check in was smooth, the hotel has a lot of free parking areas for guests with rent-a-cars. It is located right at the Gargadoros beach, it is walking distance to Amoudara beach and 10-15 mins drive to beautiful Voulisma beach. Also, 10-15 walking distance to the centre of Agios Nikolaos, where all the restaurants are located. The room was spacious and clean, it had beautiful sea view and the breakfast was really good. Highly recommend, also nice value for money!

We rented the two bedroom villa and were very impressed with the quality of the property, great amenities. The host was very attentive and stays on site at all times. The pool is incredible and perfect for kids. I would highly recommend staying here and enjoying the local beaches. We were not crazy about Ag Nikolaos, but would return to this property in a heartbeat! Plenty to do around the property and avoid the hustle of the big city.
