FAQs about hotels in Hobart

Historic City Comes of Age

Historic Hobart, with its convict past, was often referred to as Australia’s neglected backwater. How times have changed as its temperate climate, quiet lifestyle and fabulous food and markets make it a revitalising tourist destination along the Derwent River in Tasmania.

The city’s significant maritime history begins at Constitution Dock, situated along the waterfront and facing the beautiful harbour. Nearby Battery Point and affluent Sandy Bay feature Georgian and Victorian architecture and the first settler’s cottages in Australia’s 2nd oldest city.

Escape to a memorable view of Hobart town from the snow-covered Mount Wellington or get close up and personal in the city’s quaint streets. Hobart comes alive during the colourful Salamanca Market, held every Saturday morning, where you can bag a bargain or sample mouth-watering produce such as local wines and cheeses.

Cascade Brewery and Cadbury’s Chocolates have tours of these Tasmanian icons or visit Wrest Point Casino, a popular event and entertainment centre.

The annual Sydney to Hobart Yacht Race in December and Tulip Festival in the Royal Botanical Gardens swells the population in this small capital city. Make sure you check Booking.com ahead of time for your colonial cottage, cosy B&B or waterfront apartment.

My partner and I are Octogenarians, and as such our needs and expectations may differ significantly to much younger persons. There was nothing that stood out as being particularly interesting to us; it was a visit just to see another another City and it's people. We had hoped to visit MONA, but as luck would have it, it was closed whilst we were in Hobart for regular maintenance etc. Nevertheless, this will give us an excuse for another visit another day!

Hobart is a perfect location for a long weekend . It’s very relaxing , the food choice is excellent and the harbour area is great to explore . My only problem is walking up the hills . It’s hard in my old legs . We used Ubers a lot and they were around $6 a trip . Very friendly Uber drivers .

Such a beautiful city. I have visited twice. And it gets better each time. We learned so much about history visiting Bruny Island and Wineglass Bay during this tip. Cannot wait to visit other parts of Hobart as well as Tasmania.

    Always love coming to Tassie!

Always love coming to Tassie! Such a wonderful part of Australia. Hobart is a great place to base yourself for day trips around the local area. Fantastic views from Mt Wellington but make sure to rug upas it can be very cold up there!! Day out at MONA was amazing and well worth a visit! Salamanca Markets of a Saturday great place to find awesome stuff.

Everything!! Even the rain! Just do it!!

Everything!! Even the rain! Just do it!! You just have to do it to experience it. Beautiful place! The worst part was leaving! If it rains, still get out in it. Don’t let the rain stop you. It’s all part of the charm of the place. Places to eat close early if an evening so get that out of the way so you can roam on a full belly. The history of the place is fascinating and it is special to see hand crafted blocks from the penal days in refurbished restaurants within these original buildings. You mind is constantly cast back to the convicts who suffered the harshness that would have been the olde country of yesteryear! Gorgeous places and fabulous food. Leave a few kilos spare in your luggage for the things you purchase at the Salamanca markets. The place reminds you that you are alive. Breathe deeply the refreshing air that clears those sinuses. All of it can be done very comfortably whilst staying at City Retreat Hobart. Just do it!!

We didn't have the Breakfast. We had a meal at the Shoreline Cafe which was good. The staff in the cafe were also good. The facilities at the Shoreline Hotel were okay but not great. There was rubbish left in the bin in the Bathroom when we arrived, but apart from that the room was clean. The bed in the room was comfortable, but the pull-out sofa bed was not comfortable. We were looking for accommodation close to the Hobart Airport, so the Shoreline Hotel was handy. Overall, the value for money was okay.

The hotel was in a great location - an easy walk to the waterfront, shops & restaurants in the CBD. The staff were helpful & friendly. We had a spacious room with a harbour view. The main eating area was fantastic & reasonably priced as we were staying in Hobart Mon- Wed when it was very quiet in the city & not much was open.
