A town and surrounding area full of history from the Great War, at 8pm local time a service of remembrance is held at the Menin Gate. We hired out electric bikes to travel as the area is very cycle friendly, for alcoholic drinks the best bar for friendliness and atmosphere is De Afspraak on Diksmuidestraat. Seems to be where the locals go as the prices are around a third of bars around the Menin Gate. The best museum for history of the great War is the Paschendale Museum in Zonnebeke. Great for a few days, good atmosphere, shops a bit expensive, you need to walk out of town for about 20 mins to get a large shop. Try the Portuguese grill in the side street by the cathedral. The WW1 history is the real draw.
The WW1 history is the real draw. Despite being totally reconstructed, the town is full of character and the Last Post at the Menin Gate is a must see, very moving. If you have your own transport getting around couldn’t be...
If you have your own transport getting around couldn’t be simpler. The roads are very safe and easy to manage. Three days provides anyone ample time to visit the towns history, as well as travel further afield. There’s a large water park for the family, and for others, some of the local brewers open their doors. Ypres isn’t London, with a cacophony of background noise. The Field of Flanders Museum in the Cloth Hall is very moving. I would have liked to have visited it a second day. Seeing the area and the restored trench warfare sites was important to start to picture the horrors of WW I. Ypres is a beautiful city just over the French border in Belgium. An easy drive from Calais or Dunkirk the city is at the heart of Flanders Fields and is a must for those with an interest in the history of the Great War. The museum in the town centre, the Grot Markt is a great place to start a visit and from there places like Tyne Cot, Sanctuary Wood, Essex Farm and Langemark are easy to get to. There is a very wide range of places to eat and drink all around the town centre, take your pick, and you will not be disappointed. Shopping in town is easy and although there is a plethora of chocolate shops the best by far is Leonadis on the main square where the owners Hans and Stephanie will make you very welcome. Parking in and around Ypres is easy and generally very cheap. This is a great place to experience Flemish food, beer ..and chocolate as well as taking in the history. The 8:00pm ceremony of the Last Post at the Menin Gate I think is a must. Every night the main Menin Road is closed and people gather to remember the men who died in the Ypres Salient in the Great War and have no known grave. A moving and respectful way to remember the men from all over the Commonwealth who are honoured here.Guest review byGordonUnited Kingdom
