FAQs about hotels in Dresden

The Jewel Box

Known as the 'Jewel Box', Dresden is a stunning German city with rich history, an important classical music scene, and an unforgettable Baroque and Rococo-inspired city centre.

Located on the banks of the Elbe River, the whole city was destroyed during World War II, but has now been rebuilt into one of the most interesting places in Europe. Like a phoenix from the ashes, the Church of Our Lady (Frauenkirche) is an imposing building that is one of the most beloved symbols of the city.

Magnificent Zwinger Palace is the main Dresden attraction, featuring impressive pavilions and a majestic garden in the middle. Continue your journey along the cultural centre of Germany and visit the picturesque Baroque square of Neumarkt. Also not to be missed is Brühl Terrace, a promenade nicknamed the 'Balcony of Europe', because of its excellent view of the River Elbe.

Enjoy a relaxing stroll around the city and you will find a selection of cosy Dresden restaurants and beer gardens serving local dishes and fine wines from the surrounding vineyards.   Dresden Airport is the international airport located in the district of Klotzsche, featuring a railway station in the terminal building. Take the train and head to your Booking.com hotel, guest house or apartment.

Excellent tram and local train networks. Day tickets are good value (discount for ages 60+) but beware the zonal boundaries. City centre particularly attractive when fewer people around - early morning and dusk. Steam paddle boats are magnificent.

I had dreamt of visiting Dresden for some twenty years and this summer as part of a two week stay in Germany my dream came true. And even better a very dear old friend joined me for the visit. The cityscape in the old town is breathtaking, from the Frauenkirche to the Zwinger. We lingered at the beautiful Procession of Princes…We got to see the remnants of a collapsed bridge (the ill-fated Carola bridge), as well as the beautiful Blue Wonder bridge. We saw monumental buildings and the tiny Schiller museum in green hills, tucked away from the city hustle and bustle. We visited a variety of wonderful museums (paintings new and old, porcelain Chinese and Meissen, royal treasures and Karl May, the latter complete with Winnetou humour!) We had delicious breakfasts at the charming Viennese Bakery just around the corner from the Albertinum (tasty food freshly made, in central but still quiet location, with friendly staff) and lovely early evening meals in the Neustadt, as well as in Radebeul on a terrace overlooking vineyards…we were lucky with the weather having just missed a debilitating heatwave and enjoyed ourselves thoroughly. Getting there and back from Munich took a while (we had to change trains and accept changes to the schedule), but everything worked out fine

Allow for enough time in Dresden.

Allow for enough time in Dresden. The museums are amazing, especially the Grünes Gewölbe and the Türkische Cammer. Both contain things you won’t see anywhere else in Europe. I didn’t have enough time to visit the Albertinum, so that’s for another visit. And check out the programme at Semperoper - a stunning interior, excellent productions (we saw three) and much cheaper than London.
