I’m my opinion The Faroe Islands are not a holiday destination, but rather activity one. The weather is very changeable one minute to the next, and the beaches are all black sand, or volcanic dust, not ideal for sunbathing. The islands are quite small and most places of interest can be visited in no more that two days. Having said that the people are very nice and friendly, and if you want a hiking break they are ideal. I only stayed three full days, but saw all the islands in that time. Great restaurants with three Michelin-rated restaurants in town. Lots of fine dining choices. We visited a few of the other islands. Great if you like hiking and natural beauty and serenity. A very underrated capital. There's so much to do with plenty of nice places to walk (including a park), an art museum to visit, and so many shops and restaurants to go to. Tórshavn is the capital but a very small town.
Tórshavn is the capital but a very small town. There aren't many restaurants or things to do. The museum and gallery (one of each) are good but small. Each charge an entry fee. The town is walkable, and it was nice to explore the old government area on the harbour. There are some nice cafes. We found the local people to be unused to tourism. They were not especially welcoming, and not everyone spoke English in shops or cafes (I don't speak Faroese). I think the Faroes have some way to go before they are ready to embrace full-on tourism. They are a little 'rough' in handling non-locals - no welcome greeting in a restaurant was commonplace. Tórshavn does have a small mall called SMS which is pleasant but there isn't much there if you're used to a larger city. Don't go to the Faroes and expect an abundance of culture to enjoy; go for the outdoors. Go to hike and drive across the wilderness. Boat trips are over-priced. You have to hire a car to go and see more of the Faroes. It is expensive to drive through the toll tunnels from island to island - in one week we spent GBP 240 on tolls. There aren't many flights to and from Tórshavn from Edinburgh - twice per week. We should have done 3 days instead of 7 days.Guest review byANTHONYUnited Kingdom - 8.0

Torshavn is a small town concentrated on the port area. It still has its medieval street pattern and many interesting quirky old buildings that are still in use. Everything is in walking distance with a few steep sections. We couldn’t have had better service, including accommodating us at very short notice when we realised we had to leave our ferry from Iceland at 3am on our motorbike. The rooms were not massive but well presented and comfortable. The garden area had comfy seating and the hot tub was lovely. Breakfast was very good and service even better. You could get also coffee and tea for free during the day. Only bad thing was the eggs, there was not possible to get an hard-boiled egg (I asked for one but they were not either hard-boiled). The location is good, close to the city centre. Close to a sea shore with beautiful view of Nólsyarfjørður. You have a beautiful view of the harbor and the accommodation is fully equipped. It was very spacious with plenty of room. A few meters away is a large parking lot where you can always park your car, and a supermarket that stays open until very late is just a few minutes' walk away.
