La Rochelle is a beautiful city. There was so much to do. We went to Ile D’Aix one day where we really enjoyed the Napoleon museum and the Africa Museum. We loved the towers in La Rochelle. My girls enjoyed the jewellery making at Made By Me where you can also paint a t-shirt or a cap or some ceramics. We will definitely be back and plan to go for a few days to Ile de Re as a week was probably slightly too long in the city with kids. It’s a lovely city with lots to see.
It’s a lovely city with lots to see. Much of it is pedestrianised so easy to walk around. Cycling is very easy and there are bikes to hire, lots of cycle paths. Great restaurant choices. Travelled to La Rochelle by train from Nantes, 1hr 48mins direct. City is very active over the weekend, with music and wide variety of restaurants. Bus day trip to Saint Martin de-Re Island at 2.50Euros a must, from bus station located behind the railway station access via the walk over. The old port is very lovely.
The old port is very lovely. The restaurants in La Rochelle were quite disappointing as the quality of the food was poor. Much more was expected regarding their fresh fish etc, being a coastal town. The coffee was not good. I have travelled extensively in France and have to say that as beautiful as La Rochelle is, the restaurants are quite mediocre and are poor value for money. Part of experiencing different regions is enjoying not only the different landscapes, architecture and culture but the food so for me this is important. Ile de Ré which is linked to La Rochelle via a bridge had incredible ice-creams and sorbets and highly recommend trying out their multitude of wonderful flavour combinations at La Martinière ! Once again, however, were met with very mediocre quality food. I am by no means expecting michelin star quality ...I am simply referring to good, locally produced and prepared food for all to enjoy! If staying in La Rochelle, a car is not needed as everything is within walking distance and pedestrian friendly. It is also a bicycle friendly area !Guest review byBelindaFrance - 10.0

The old town and the port area of La Rochelle are amazing to explore with so much history. There are lots of boat trips available to the islands around La Rochelle and Ile de Re is well worth a visit. We have stayed in over 15 different apartments on this trip around France and this was the best one yet. Such a pity we didn't book it for longer. It is in a lovely old heritage building yet the apartment internally has been really tastefully renovated with all the modern conveniences. It's great. Lovely Catherine met us at the apartment and showed us everything. It's in the old town but a few hundred metres from the busy part, so it was very quiet.Guest review byRodAustralia

Great wallpapers throughout etc.. It has a carpark £20 per night, it is next to the hotel and very secure, though a little tight. Breakfast was great for a cooked english breakfast but lacked the pastries, croissants. ham, cheese etc... for a continental breakfast. £12 pp. Staff very pleasant. Electric dyson fan in the bedroom.
