We liked everything about the hotel. We have stayed here 2 a year for the last 3 years. The staff are always pleasant and friendly. If we need help they would help us. The rooms are always clean and fresh. Warm in the winter and cool in the summer. The bed is comfortable and clean. The bathroom is very clean and the shower is great.

It is a quaint hotel with a great location. Whilst our term ‘faded elegance’ could be viewed as pejorative it actually captures the strength of the hotel. Cedric was the perfect table waiter who looked after 18 people alone and with sublime attentiveness. The chef’s contribution was no less notable. If you visit Laon, stay here.

    Our visit was a Saturday in August, the main streets were decorated with balloons and umbrellas, the pavements were full of restaurants/cafes tables and chairs, very festive. A bonus was the use of old fashioned wooden games with instructions, unfortunately only in French. The cathedral was a disappointment, very large, very beautiful, half empty and all information posters in French only, could do better!

    It's walkabilty, despite the hills. Glorious views. The Cathedral and Knights Templar chapel were well maintained, interesting and beautiful. Loved the ports and other historic sites, and there was free entry.

    The town has history dating back thousands of years and is...

    The town has history dating back thousands of years and is documented from the time of the Romans; the character of the town is enhanced from its elevated position, with the walled perimeter, dense buildings, and cathedral, standing tall in otherwise flat countryside. There's a real sense of arrival as you climb up to your final destination. We've visited three times, twice in winter as a long drive stopover, and once in the summer. The cobbled streets, old buildings, cafes, shops, bars, restaurants, and sites are varied and interesting. It's a place that's full of character and well worth a visit for a day or two, maybe longer. We particularly like staying in the Hôtel de la Bannière de France in the heart of the old centre, assuming we have some time to appreciate the visit. There are other cheaper options in the lower town for travellers who just want a rapid overnight pit stop.

    I more or less put a pin in a map to find a place to stay on the way to the Alps from Calais. Laon was a very pleasant surprise, with lots of interesting buildings including the exceptional cathedral. I wish we had been staying for a few days and it would be a lovely romantic place for a short break.

    Laon was such a pleasant surprise.

    Laon was such a pleasant surprise. The Office of Tourism has a free downloadable app that really worked well; it described the Cathedral with detail that we would never have found on our own as well as offering several loops around the city. We also were impressed with the vast history of this town. It obviously was an important community in the 12th and 13th century. It's location atop a plateau allowed for breathtaking views across the countryside.

    Pretty historic town with lovely buildings, beautiful cathedral and lots to explore. Range of cafes and restaurants but seem to close early. Car parking in the centre is limited to one and a half hours and you need to purchase a blue disk from the tabac or tourist office next to the cathedral parking outside the town walls is free and, consequently, tricky to find a space. Fromagerie des Remparts has gorgeous meats, cheeses and wine with outside seating.

    Hotel de la Banniere de France has a charm that you don’t see so often and is ideally located to visit the Cathedral of Laon. The hotel owners are naturally friendly and welcoming. The staff are polite and helpful. The secure off-road parking was ideal for our motorcycles. The hotel‘s restaurant serves very tasty and well presented meals and all at the reasonable price.

    Laon is a perfect stop over for anyone heading to the Grand Est. We had a lovely room facing the cathedral. The atmosphere was enchanting, especially with the evening light display in the square. Dining in the hotel’s restaurant in the square with a view of the cathedral made it a special overnight stay.

    The hotel was lovely. Great location in a great town. Mathieu the host was very friendly and helpful. A very characterful property. Breakfast was very nice and traditionally French. Would definitely recommend it to anyone visiting Laon!
