Askrigg is an excellent base for touring the magnificent Yorkshire Dales. Roads over the hills to Swaledale are spectacular and rather narrow in parts (but well worth the occasional exciting meetings with traffic heading in the opposite direction). Tourist sites in Wensleydale are more easily accessed on wider roads so Hawes, Aysgarth and Leyburn visits are "a doddle."

One of the most appealing villages in the Yorkshire Dales. Although Askrigg is steeped in history and has hosted the famous All Creatures Great and Small programme, it does also boast 3 good quality but very different pubs which allow an enjoyable mini pub crawl if you like that sort of thing!

The village has a lot of character and offers much countryside around too. We used the cafe, the shop, and had drinks in the pub - sadly not all of them! The people are lovely and welcoming, and it was interesting visiting the church. We used the Little White Bus to get around, which was very easy in both directions, visiting Leyburn and Hawes as well as Bolton Castle and the Aysgarth Falls. All within a reasonable distance to travel on the bus. If you are lucky, you will get a private tour with a driver who knows it all!!

It is a small place but with a few good shops and a nice café. The locals seemed friendly. The church spire had been recently painted which reached the national news and it was good to have a walk around the church to see what the fuss was about.

A beautiful village which felt authentic.

A beautiful village which felt authentic. There are three great pubs with great beer and food plus the Yorkshire Dales Brewery Tap (Friday and Saturday). As the village lies off the main trunk road it is mercifully protected from the hordes of feckless motorcyclists who seem to plague the A684 (an out of control motorbike pulling a full throttle wheelie almost wiped us out on the drive over). Surely something needs to be done to make these roads safe from the marauding bikers in search of thrills and spills (these are I guess in the minority, but they certainly make themselves seen and heard).

What a fantastic B&B with such amazing hosts in Barry and Ann! When we arrived I hadn't been well, they were so kind and went above and beyond to help me recover. Our room was excellent 👌 The most comfortable King Size bed with a superb ensuite and breakfast next morning was delicious. I am Gluten free and there was plenty of choice. Situated in the beautiful village of Askrigg, Thornsgill House is definitely worth a visit.
