Hotel was lovely, the guy at reception was very nice and helpful, and we had a nice time in the pool. The room was cosy, and I liked that it was pet friendly as I had my cat with me (we were moving across the country). Breakfast was fantastic. Would definitely stay again.

FAQs about hotels in Canterbury

Heavenly Heritage and Literary Legend

Canterbury’s religious and historic significance has inspired literary greatness. Chaucer’s ‘Canterbury Tales’ were based on pilgrimages to the bygone shrine of Thomas A Becket, who was murdered here. The Marlowe Theatre is named after the 16th-century playwright born here, and the Canterbury Museum has an exhibit on Rupert Bear, whose author lived in this River Stour city.

River cruises and punting provide fantastic views of the striking weavers’ houses right on the water, and of Westgate - the UK’s largest city gate. Other sections of the city walls remain, and there are also ruins of St Augustine’s Abbey, named after the 6th-century saint who brought Christianity to England. He was the first Archbishop of Canterbury, but the modern-day seat is the UNESCO World Heritage-listed cathedral, dating to the 12th century.

From the same period are the Norman castle ruins, occupying the site of a wooden fort constructed by William the Conqueror. The mound they sit on in Dane John Gardens is thought to be a Roman cemetery, and an original mosaic is visible in the Roman Museum.

In the Buttermarket half-timbered houses and historic inns are interspersed with shops, and big name brands line the Whitefriars Shopping Centre. The Canterbury accommodation on Booking.com includes luxury hotels with swimming pools, cheap hostels and city centre B&Bs.

Canterbury has a lovely relaxed feel to it and is a very nice city for walking. Very friendly people! The cathedral is magnificent. Nice to be able to catch a bus to the seaside as well. Lots of nice places to eat and good shops - love Fenwicks!

Canterbury really surprised me in being much nicer than most places I've visited in the UK. The north west side of the town centre (from Westgate tower) in particular reminded me of how good England could look 50 years ago with cobbled streets and beautiful buildings. Definitely visit Westgate Gardens, small, but beautiful. Only thing I would complain about is the ridiculous charge not only to get in to the cathedral but to even walk outside it.

I love the antiquity of the buildings and the river Stour, with lots of flowers and bushes along its banks and with punts drifting on the river. Trying to drive through those narrow streets is a bit of a nightmare but we were able to walk into town. Certain parts are very romantic. To get into the cathedral would cost us practically £80 for four of us so perhaps we can return another time and make a good day of it to get our money's worth.

Canterbury is, of course, dominated by the wonderful cathedral but the excellent largely pedestrianised centre is interesting and full of local speciality and national shops. We would recommend the park and ride bus service if you arrive by car. It is sensibly priced, frequent, reliable and really easy to use.

The staff was amazing and so helpful. I had all my bridal party staying at the hotel and they went above and beyond. The breakfast was amazing (continental buffet -pastries were so yummy- and a nice selection of cooked breakfast on top). The location is great (4mn walk from Canterbury West and 3mn walk from the old city/city centre). The rooms are so comfy (bath in the bathroom and beds are the comfiest I've slept in, in a while)

The hotel was only a 7 minute walk to Canterbury town centre but was on a quiet calm little street. The room size was great and it was lovely and warm with a spare blanket. There was a kettle and a coffee pot to make teas and coffees as well as a little fridge if we had anything we wanted to keep in there. The bed was super comfy and shower was lovely. Self check in and out was particularly handy and very secure and safe.

As the hotel was at the cheaper end, price-wise, for Canterbury I expected somewhere a bit run-down; in place of that I found a very practical, comfy, hotel with quirky characteristics - and enjoyed great sleep, wonderful showers and filling breakfasts.
