FAQs about hotels in Chester

A Walk Through History

Featuring half-timbered buildings, almost complete city walls and a wealth of Roman heritage, beautiful Chester sits by the border with Wales.

The southernmost gate of the walls overlooks the River Dee, and the road leading north is one of 4 in the city to follow the original Roman roads. To the east, the Roman Gardens include a reconstructed underfloor heating system.

Nearby Grosvenor Park has remains of a stone Roman amphitheatre, thought to have been built on the world’s largest wooden amphitheatre at the time. Over the river in the suburb of Handbridge is a 2nd-century shrine to Minerva, and an informative display in the Grosvenor Museum provides the background to all this heritage.

In the west is Chester Racecourse and nearby are the medieval castle remains. More medieval buildings line the cobbled city centre streets. Some of these are The Rows, black-and-white timbered buildings housing 2 levels of shops. Other shopping options are the indoor market by the cathedral, and the Cheshire Oaks Outlet Village in Ellesmere Port to the north. The road out there passes Chester Zoo, one of the UK’s best zoos.

Booking.com’s range of Chester accommodation includes hotels with swimming pools, guest houses by the train station and B&Bs with parking near Chester Airport.

Chester is a brilliant city with great shops, great choice of eating places, and pubs. Also a fantastic busking guitarist called Andy Martin. We stopped for 2 days, which actually didn't give us enough time to cover everything we wanted to do. On your way home, Cheshire Oaks is well worth a visit.

I really enjoyed the beauty of the city's distinctive architecture, and it was wonderful to be able to walk the city walls. The cathedral is beautiful, but I also particularly loved the church of St John the Baptist where I was lucky enough to attend a free lunchtime concert of piano music. I didn't eat out (except for pizza at the open air theatre production I went to see which was freshly cooked on site and very good) but there were lots of very tempting cafes and restaurants I'd love to explore on a longer visit. Chester is very walkable, with lovely vistas around every corner.

Chester is a beautiful city , and mostly confined to a sensible size The pedestrian streets are excellent and not only make it easy to get around, but they contain a diverse range of shops and restaurants , moreover the cathedral is in the centre of town and well worth a visit. Generally we found the people in Chester to be friendly, polite and very welcoming The buildings are so beautiful, that at times it is easy to feel that you are in the middle of a picture postcard We have visited Chester twice and have already booked our third visit.

We were welcomed by a very friendly host who showed us to our room, explained how everything worked and booked in our breakfast times. The location isn’t far from Chester City Centre - we walked to and from it several times in our visit so having free parking at the hotel was really convenient. I expect this hotel was much quieter than staying in the centre - in fact we wouldn’t have known there were any other guests staying if we hadn’t seen them at breakfast! 2 very friendly neighbourhood cats outside who also gave us a great welcome!!

Ideal location for us after visiting the nearby zoo. Handy park & ride facility into Chester city centre located across the road. Plenty of choice of delicious breakfast with friendly staff to greet us in the morning. Both receptionists we spoke to were also very helpful. We never realised how big the hotel was, it was a long walk to our room at the back! Room itself was ideal, clean with comfy beds and bath/shower combo. We used the swimming pool which good with clean changing rooms, remember your £1 for the lockers!

Stopped at the Mill Hotel for a short break. Great location to explore Chester City centre within 5 minutes walking distance. The room was spacious and clean. The check in process was easy, and the reception staff were pleasant and helpful. Having parking available at the hotel so close to the centre was an added bonus.
