We absolutely loved the location. It is atop a hill so a fairly steep climb but once you are in the city, castle and cathedral views are phenomenal! The Holi and Bhang restaurant serves some delicious food. The selection at breakfast was nice too. Excellent hospitality.

FAQs about hotels in Durham

Sacred English Heritage

Durham could definitely be one of those towns that appear in fairy tales and stories of kings and knights. Lying on a hilled peninsula formed by the Wear River, the striking cathedral overlooks from the hilltop, surrounded by the castle, palaces and historic buildings. Get transported back in time by the magic of this English jewel, declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Though archaeological evidence suggests the area has been inhabited since 2000 BC, the present-day settlement was founded by monks from Lindisfarne in 995, choosing the area as the final resting place of Saint Cuthbert. Symeon of Durham stated once that ‘to see Durham is to see the English Zion, and by doing so one may save oneself a trip to Jerusalem’. Hotels and B&Bs in Durham’s historic centre are a popular choice to enjoy this historic legacy.

Its powerful religious position granted such great honour to the city, that the bishop still holds the rights to a seat in the House of Lords, and to accompany the sovereign at the coronation. During the 19th century and encompassing the industrial revolution, the university was founded, with Durham Castle becoming its first college.

Whether you’re searching for a cottage, a modern hotel, or a cheap hostel, Booking.com offers a wide range of accommodation in the area.

    Durham is beautiful .

Durham is beautiful . It is old and has stone buildings and cobbled streets with much pedestrianisation . It has a river which is live and has swans and herons right in the town centre with walks along it out into the countryside - there are lots of green areas and trees . The castle and Cathedral are stunning. Durham seems to have a culture of community and friendliness with nice diversity - hope this continues despite Reform getting elected , hope they won't be there for long - there are all kinds of cafes available , people are happy to stop and chat, there is a market place and weekly open air markets in the square . The library and cinema are central - lot of streets and different areas to explore , bridges , sports areas - a nice mix of students and locals make it a lively atmosphere in a nice way .The Miners' Gala happens in July and I hope to get to it next year as it is a huge event for the whole city .

    A small, quiet city.

A small, quiet city. Architecture is nice; paths along the river are nice; the city is perfect for everyone who enjoys walking in the evening and who prefers to stay far away from a crowd. There were some semi-drunk people, but it happens.

Visit to Durham Castle is rather misleading.

Visit to Durham Castle is rather misleading. Students occupy the Motte! Park & ride buses are very welcome. Riverside walks are wonderful and relatively flat. Durham Cathedral is a must visit. Beamish is a must visit - lots to see. Hadrian's Wall at Chesters Fort - not too far away. Rivers Tyne, Derwent and Wear are very attractive. A visit to the moors is very quiet, yet scenic.

Lovely friendly place. plenty of cafe/Bistro places to eat in or take away. Cathedral is a great place to explore. Don't agree with having to pay £8 to see the Magna Carta, this outprices most families. lovely walk down by the river.

    A surprising little gem!

A surprising little gem! The city is quite small but boasts a stunning cathedral and fascinating castle. People here are friendly and there are many independent shops, cafes, restaurants and pubs. You can walk along the river or hire a rowing boat. A lovely place to spend a full day.

The property was conveniently situated in a lovely part of Durham. The city centre was a short drive away, as was Hexham. We loved that the property literally looked like old converted stables, especially with the double doors. The property was equipped well with kettle, coffee/tea, milk, iron and ironing board, hair dryer, TV and even a fridge! The hosts were very friendly and welcoming.

After lots of research, the only decent dog friendly hotel in Durham City. Stayed for two nights was in the area to get a new passport which is also only 15 minutes from the hotel to durham passport office.

Our second stay at Victoria Inn, whilst visiting our daughter at university. Really handy for University and Durham City Centre- easy walking distance. Love the on site parking, which is a real boon in Durham. The pub is delightful and the locals and staff are friendly and hospitable. Our room was comfy and warm and it was nice to have a bath!

The hotel is ideally situated for exploring Durham, right at the bottom of Elvet Bridge which leads into the compact city centre. The rooms are located over a busy pub, so it can get a bit lively but the spacious and very well appointed Studio apartment that we stayed in was right at the top of the house, so away from the immediate noise.
