Fantastic stay for our family of 4, at the Royal Oak. We stayed in the upstairs suite, which is a recent and very modern loft conversion with essentially a double bedroom plus small landing with seating and bathroom. Owners Sarah and Dave very welcoming and helpful. Clean and immaculate throughout. The bedroom is spacious enough to add in a couple of low single beds under the sloped side ceilings, so fitted our young family well. Fast WiFi available and tea/coffee making. Decent continental i.e. pasrtries, cereal, toast and fruit breakfast provided in the back room downstairs. We also stayed for dinner and the steak and ale pie was great. Good old style pub and beer incl ale selection. Easy parking in the pub at park. Room a little cold given the time of year but there is an electric heater and heated floor so enough. Great view of the hill for adventurous climbers unlike us! We were travelling through while visiting nearby Hay on Wye and so this was an ideal stay about 20 mins out, not too close and beautiful countryside. Also one of the few family rooms we could find near to Hay with good reviews, which are well deserved. Would recommend, thanks Sarah and Dave.

The owner/management team could not have been friendlier, likewise the front of house. Menu was varied and the food and service were excellent. Slept like a log and woke to the best view imaginable.

Historical ambience was wonderful. Staff were all helpful and pleasant. The carvery meal which we enjoyed that night had an excellent vegetarian nut roast with a vegetarian gravy especially supplied, and a good selection of veg to go with it. The breakfast the next morning was fabulous. We apparently had a free room upgrade. I'm not sure what the difference would have been. Our room was wonderful.

A lovely bright sunny apartment, recently refurbished and beautifully decorated. Everything supplied for a very comfortable stay and the supplies and bottle of wine were very much appreciated, Thank you. The host became a quick friend and was most helpful. We were well taken care of and entertained with Welch hospitality. A bit of a windy road trek but well worth the effort.

Vivienne and Adrian, you are more than gracious hosts! You are proud of what you do, and take immense pride in (and put in loads of love into) giving guests like me and my son an unforgettable experience at the loveliest spot on Earth—Hergest (pronounced "Har-Guest") Ridge. I wonder if Mike Oldfield had you in mind when he composed his unforgettable record of the same name. All that being said, I can only repeat what others have said here—comfortable, clean, spacious rooming. Ample, delicious breakfast, and a personable greeting and care. What exceeds even these superlatives is the invaluable insights you gave on the BEST gateway to experience Hergest Ridge. Yes! I found the Whetstone AND the Monkey Puzzle trees, both of which are havens of peace and direct portals to Otherworld. Please, please, please, continue doing what you love and loving others with the exquisite grace you do. You made this the trip of a lifetime for me and my son. Thank you! <3 <3 <3

The locals were friendly and passed on information about places to visit. The local footpaths are not very well maintained and my husband had to turn back from a planned walk along Offa's Dyke Path as it was impassable.
