The manager Maria and the volunteer are super hostpitable and patient to my bad English. I was so lucky to own the whole 4- bed room as I was the only guest booking that room. The location is just aside the main road A 9 which is quite convenient to start off for a cyclist. I was told the hostel used to be a school, so you may find the dining room, living room and bed rooms are quite spacious and roofs are high.

So, I had a slight issue with the boiler upon arrival, however I email Calum (the owner) and asked him to call me to resolve. He did this promptly and we resolved the issue on the phone.

Helmsdale is a small village by the coast.

Helmsdale is a small village by the coast. Couple of restaurants and a small supermarket. Couple of pubs. Don't expect a town full of things to do on an evening. This town is great to use as a base when exploring the surrounding area or a stop off on your way up or back to the top of Scotland.

A quiet little old fashioned fishing port in a suburban area. The main road is a 20mph limit but there are constant streams of flashy vehicles flying along at 60mph - the police do nothing. Walks are quite short and full of untended woodland or rocky beaches. Not somewhere I would return to…there is one Spar shop and one fish restaurant …which closed 24hrs we were there. Shame The Bridge Hotel didnt cater for meals or bar drinks, it was renovated and more bedrooms added. Wifi is hopeless!

We liked Helmsdale and thought their Museum and Art gallery...

We liked Helmsdale and thought their Museum and Art gallery were well above average for such a small town. "Timespan" is well worth a visit. The current art show "Murmurations" was most thought provoking and well executed. The museum also explained the massive influence of the Duke of Sutherland, both good and bad. The wee cafe was most welcome. From the Monument dedicated to the emigrants, above the town, you get a great view of the surrounding countryside, and the harbour is worth a look. Take the A897 out of Helmsdale to Forsinard and the Flow country, it's well worth a visit to see this historic peat land. The best location to eat, in this region, is La Mirage. Fabulous fish, but you should book as they seemed very busy both nights.

I am cycling through Scotland on a long bikepacking trip with my dog - so haven't spent much time looking around. I would have liked to visit places like TimeSpan museum if I'd had more time. Helmsdale would definitely be worth a revisit.

Peaceful location and parking outside property.

Peaceful location and parking outside property. Nice shower and best chip shop ever in Helmsdale. Train passing front of property was quirky and lounge comfy. Wish we had of visited in the summer as it was cold in the property as electric heating was on a timer.
