All the staff in Royal Sportsman Hotel were super nice but professional — offering suggestions on where to eat, what to do, how to go to attractions etc. They were clearly short-staffed — I saw many of them worked long hours (especially the F&B members) but yet they were cheery and helpful to me throughout my stay. The room was exceptional, cosy and clean. The location was only 5 minutes walk from Porthmadog train station.

    A charming place to visit.

A charming place to visit. The views, scenery, local people, heritage railways, harbour, easy transport access and access to amenities, shops, restaurants and shops, walks along the cob, with views of Snowdon. The Welsh Highland Heritage Railway, has an excellent museum and local staff have an excellent knowledge of the history of the area, the slate mining and heritage railways. Great for families. The scenery along the routes on the Welsh Highland Railway is spectacular. (This is separate to the Welsh Highland Heritage Railway). Suitable for families. The views along the cob, estuary and harbour are scenic and the views of Snowdon and surrounding region are very scenic. Portmeirion and the David Lloyd George Museum and his childhood home are easy to reach by car or public transport. There is a harbour museum and a number of other attractions within the region. The food at Marina La Cucina was freshly cooked and very good food. The restaurants get busy during the height of season, so we would recommend booking earlier in the day for a table.

We took the Ffestiniog and Welsh Highland railway from Porthmadog to Blaenau in one of the panoramic coaches. On the whole, we were disappointed and other people said the journey from Porthmadog to Caernarfon was better.

Porthmadog has two scenic railways with great trips.

Porthmadog has two scenic railways with great trips. It has all the usual facilities with good cafes restaurants and ice cream shops etc. Good range of supermarkets for self catering. Not overly commercial so retains a Welsh charm. Very easy to access other areas with great road and rail links. Nice marina area and places for walks. Dog friendly. Cariad icecream delish.

Excellent centre for all your needs and convenient for exploring the highlights of North Wales. The Welsh Mountain Railway station is central to the town with its unique set of journeys available. Portmerion is a share distance away and is a must to visit. Beddgelert village is a picturesque village not to be missed on your way into the mountains of Snowdonia.

What a wonderful place to visit. Location was perfect.

What a wonderful place to visit. Location was perfect. We visited Portmeirion, arriving at 09:30 with pre-booked tickets and were very lucky as it was quiet. Afterwards we managed to squeeze in a journey on the Ffestiniog railway the same day (once again we had prebooked our tickets). Lots of eateries in Porthmadog but we found an amazing Thai called Thai Harbwr. Food was so good we ate there twice. Check opening times as at time of visiting they were not open Mondays. Wish we lived closer.

Excellent location surrounded by mountains and river,...

Excellent location surrounded by mountains and river, especially if you have a liking for steam trains. The mid point of the Welsh Highland Railway (to Caenarfon) and the Ffestiniog Railway (to Blaenau Ffestiniog). Both journeys showcase the sometimes wild scenery of North Wales and the industrial slate mining of the past. On the other hand Portmeirion is very close by for something completely different.

2 Bed Apartment on the harbour in Porthmadog was a surprise. 2 bedroom apartment was spacious with amazing views, right next to town shopping areas. Museums and the Ffestiniog Historic Railway. We were amazed that we saw 5 different steam trains operating at once, at Harbour Station only yards from we were staying.

The gate keepers cottage has been renovated to a really high standard and has everything you need, sat in a beautiful setting. Felt very private and the grounds of the hotel are lovely. This site is so central to so many lovely areas, we visited several places each day after having breakfast in the hotel.
