As someone who loves visiting historical cities and eating good food, I had a blast! I felt safe as a woman traveling with her husband and everyone was friendly. The food was my favorite part by far! Public transportation was cheap and easy to use. As for my husband, someone who hates cities and prefers a relaxing setting, he didn’t like Athens. I'm an Aegean archaeologist by training so Athens is my go to place...at least as a starting point and finishing point. There are so many excellent restaurants to experience if one takes the time to look around...and the service is fabulous, again if you choose your place wisely. I use the same restaurants most of the time and add a few new ones each time I visit. I was a bit miffed that the Kerameikos (site) was closed when I went in August.....it was in May as well.....and one of the entrances to the Greek Agora was closed as well!!
