Great sandy beaches, cool beach bars, beautiful old town filled with vibrant clubs and restaurants. Rethymno is a vibrant small town, with scenic remnants of a multicultural past and a bunch of restaurants with plenty of choices. Although I do not enjoy much going to the beach, a great one could be found in the east of the city. The fortress is a must go, as are the old town and the mini (yet quite inclusive) archaeological museum, that manages to summarize key aspects of the town's history. For the well informed and culturally aware visitor, exploring and discovering signs and relics indicative of a multiplexed past comprising of ottoman, venician and byzantine remnants (set the ancient greek ones apart), more or less obvious, can be absolutely fascinating. I really enjoyed walking in the old town and the fortress, discovering the mosques, finding old ottoman inscriptions on marble and stone and chilling in the municipal garden (a hidden gem, away from the noisy, overstimulating, tourist-packed old town). For somebody that wants to chill out, eat and drink, there are also plenty of choices.Guest review byNikistratos - 10.0

A lovely smaller town, with an old town area that was full of beautiful buildings, alleys and place to eat, drink and shop. A real sense of history, and whilst well equipped for tourists, it still felt local and welcoming. We've been to Rethymno a few times now.
We've been to Rethymno a few times now. If you are visiting using a hire car, be ready for some interesting moments as it can be quite chaotic! The car parks especially are a nightmare to work out especially on first visit... don't expect much help from staff. Taxi prices were much more expensive than we expected... so we didn't use any. The town itself is generally very nice although there's the odd bad smell and run down building or area. There's a bit of litter here and there. The old town is lovely. Taverna owners can be a little persistent... it would be nice just to be able to look at menus without being pressured! While most shops etc were friendly I did detect an undertone of tourist resentment from some seemingly local folk. There are also the usual scams running here, roses being handed out for free, then money being demanded once they are in your hand. Nothing major that I saw.Guest review byJohn
