Sardinia in a Nutshell
The Sardinian capital, Cagliari has a historic old town, busy port and one of the island’s best beaches. The sweeping stretch of sand at Poetto offers great summer nightlife, and just inland is Molentargius lagoon, where flamingos nest against the backdrop of the city.
Cagliari is spread over a small hill and the oldest part – Quartiere Castello – lies at the top. There are far-reaching views from Bastion San Remy, its main entrance point. Medieval city walls lead from here to the simple cathedral, and nearby is the 18th-century Palazzo Regio.
By one of the original city gates is the National Archaeological Museum, housing a collection of Phoenician and Roman artefacts from the city’s Tuvixeddu Necropolis. There are also displays of the nuraghic civilisation whose former dwellings pepper Sardinia. The most impressive is Su Nuraxi north of Cagliari.
Just outside the walls are remains of a Roman amphitheatre, next to the university botanical gardens. Orange tree-lined streets descend the hill towards the seafront where restaurants and bars can be found. Cagliari FC play at Sant’Elia Stadium along the coast and opposite is the Sardinia International Fair, an important conference venue.

The historical centre is wonderful but a bit of a walk up hill if you are staying down near the port or the train station. You can take either the No 7 or No 8 bus up to the top. The beaches near to Cagliari get quite crowded. We opted for a day to Nora which is archaeological site and it has a lovely beach next to the site. Some great cafes and restaurants. we stayed in the castello area which was lovely. Full of character however it is a very steep area so there was always a climb and steps back to the apartment. We found this fine but others with mobility issues may need to consider this. The area was very quiet, lovely restaurants and bars nearby. Our stay in Cagliari was absolutely fantastic! The city offers a perfect mix of history, Mediterranean charm, and a relaxed atmosphere. We especially loved the old town with its narrow streets, charming cafés, and historic buildings – it felt like stepping back in time. The beaches in and around Cagliari are beautiful, especially Poetto Beach with its crystal-clear water and laid-back vibe. Perfect for swimming, sunbathing, and simply unwinding. Cagliari also has a lot to offer when it comes to food – fresh seafood, Sardinian specialties, and excellent wine. Cagliari has a wealth of bars and restaurants that have good food and wine, and are very reasonably priced. There is no immediate beach location within walking distance. However, there are bus services (that are air conditioned), that run every 5 minutes to most places.
