FAQs about hotels in Ferrara

A Renaissance Rival to Florence

Ferrara was a haven for the arts during the Renaissance and much of this is still evident today. The powerful Este family held court in the multi-turreted Estense Castle, protected by a moat and drawbridge, and they were illustrious patrons of artists and authors.

Bellini, Piero della Francesca and Titian all perfected their strokes here, and the university houses parts of Ludovico Ariosto’s original manuscript of his epic poem – Orlando Furioso – containing allegorical references to his sponsors. The family is also depicted in Palazzo Schifanoia’s detailed fresoces, and the Palazzo dei Diamanti gallery displays works commissioned from the School of Ferrara.

Some Este tombs are in Corpus Domini Monastery and another is in the ornate cathedral whose three-gabled façade overlooks the crenellated town hall. Both line Piazza di Trento e Trieste, the main square where locals come to socialise. Another popular square is green Piazza Ariostea.

The Este strengthened their position through marriage alliances with the influential Borgia, Medici and Gonzaga families, but they didn’t have it all their own way. Ferrara’s well-preserved city walls were built for defence, and ardent opponent of the Renaissance, Savonarola, was born in this UNESCO World Heritage city.

Surrounding cobbled streets house many luxury Ferrara hotels, cheap apartments and B&Bs near the train station, available on Booking.com.

We visited all museums and the castle of the city that you can not really skip. We also visited Ravenna (amazing city too) and another beautiful city Padova. All by train easy accessible . I strongly recommend to taste someone Capellazzi di zucca (pumpkin hats). We ate tasty food al Brindisi (one of the oldest taverns in the world! We get there accidentally! Also at La Racchetta very good option for food. For coffee and pastries at Chocolat! For ice cream at Gelateria Romana. I believe what ever your choice will be for food, wine, ice cream, aperol, coffee and more Ferrara will not disappoint you

Me and my family (wife and daughter of 12) visited Ferrara...

Me and my family (wife and daughter of 12) visited Ferrara as a stopover on our journey from Slovakia to Italy's west coast during our summer vacation. On the way back we visited the Bologna, so I can compare both cities already. Ferrara is like a hidden gem, especially with the Bologna nearby it is in Bologna's shade, but Ferrara offers something that other cities don't - that is the size and the possibility to ride a bike almost everywhere without being afraid of cars (there were some, but not that many as in the Bologna). Therefore renting a bike is highly recommended. It's also less touristy than Bologna and more calm. We had only 1 full day and something more for Ferrara and it was quite enough, however it's so cute with all it's streets and corners and little trattorias that I would love to come back again and explore more. The restaurants/trattorias were not so expensive and the food was mostly delicious, also many cafes and my favorite gelato's as well. Next time, or in the colder months I can imagine to visit also some museums/castles from inside as well. Ferrara impressed us a lot and next time would prefer to stay in Ferrara rather than in Bologna, because it truly deserves it.

    Ferrara is wonderful.

Ferrara is wonderful. It has some amazing art but has few tourists and remains a vibrant university town. Everyone goes around the centre on bicycles. The food is amazing and the ice cream out of this world. I recommend investing in a city card if you are staying a few days. I got a three day card for 22 euros. The castle cost 12 euros and I got 6 euros back for my city tax so just one more museum visit meant I had made a good decision. I went to the castle, the Palazzo Schifanoia, the Museum of the Cathedral, the Pinacoteca in the Palazzo dei Diamanti and the Jewish Museum.

This is Italy, and the centre of Ferrara is as you would expect a walk back in time architecturally. There are lots of things to see.and do. Lots of cyclists around. But it is an extremely lively place, lots of outside dining, music. Admittedly this is June and in the middle of the Ferrara Festival, but gave off a very relaxed, fun vibe.. I liked it and was sorry I had to do everything in quick time as II was only there one night.

Lots of interesting places to visit, however, I was only there for one day on a Sunday and it was a little bit busy so I didn't have time to see as much as I would have liked. I hope to return one day as it was probably my favourite city out of the places I visited on this trip.

We stayed one night at Hotel Touring in Ferrara and had a great experience. The hotel is located right in the city center, which made it perfect for exploring the town on foot. The beds and pillows were incredibly comfortable, and the bathroom was spacious and very clean – everything was truly a 10! The staff was exceptionally kind and welcoming, making us feel right at home. Breakfast was plentiful and varied, with something for everyone to enjoy.

Expectable & solid. It‘s a good hotel at a good price. Their marketing language, however, is totally exaggerated! There‘s no unforgettable experience expected, when you book a Radisson in Ferrara located near the train station.
