Although I was there on business, the fresh air, mountain views and scenic town made it an excellent, relaxing experience. It's close to Merano (which is much better known and visited), and also fairly touristy, but with the businesses aimed more at cultured tourists rather than mass tourism (not sure if there were any chain hotels there), interested in arts and finer dining. We were staying in Bolzano and going to a concert in nearby Lana (one of many for the season) that finished too late to catch the train back - so we stayed at Hilpold. It was a great decision. We liked the athmosphere around the house; apple trees everywhere and there is a garden where vegetables and herbs are growing. It's quiet but not remote; in about 10 minutes you reach Lana centre.
