Vibrancy, Vespas, Vesuvius
Undulating beside the Bay of Naples, this UNESCO World Heritage city is a maze of narrow streets and funicular railways. Although it has an incredible array of churches and monuments, it’s the sheer energy, pulsating life, and buzz of Vespas that really make it exciting.
At first you could mistake this for chaos, but given time you’ll see there’s method to the madness. The stunning, curved portico of the Royal Palace. The perfectly thin pizzas which originated here. The red pepper trinkets to ward off the evil eye adorning practically every old town doorway. All are crafted to perfection.
While all this goes on at street level, below is Underground Naples – a series of visitable tunnels and even a Graeco-Roman theatre which you stop at before emerging into someone’s house!
Head up to the Posillipo area for stunning views of the city and Vesuvius in the distance. The volcano itself can be visited and looking down from it towards Pompeii and Herculaneum gives context to the thousands of artefacts now on display in the city’s National Archaeological Museum.

As an older couple we wanted to visit Pompeii and the Old Town. We weren't disappointed. We booked the Pompeii & Heracleum tour, our guide was an archaeologist and took us through the ruins all day. It was amazing and well worth the effort. We visited the catacombs as well, its a must. Both visits require some stamina so get yourself prepared. On the third day we did the hop on hop off bus, a good way to see the city. We used the Metro extensively with no hassle's. You have to be prepared for the madness of Naples. It’s loud, unapologetic but also amazing if you look deeper. I was told Naples has many sides and it’s up to you to find them, which is very true. Around every corner there is a surprise, or a story so take time to look and find the many faces of Naples ❤️ we had 3 days and did Pompeii, Vesuvius, underground Naples tour, funicular to Vomero and st Elmo’s for spectacular views of the city, lots of getting lost in the historic district. I had been warned about Naples.
I had been warned about Naples. It was very dirty with litter everywhere. Luckily our hotel was on the promenade in front of the castle so very touristy & clean in this area. The shopping areas were ok too, I loved the cobble streets. We used naples as a centre to visit Amalfi & Pompeii. 2 or 3 nights is more than enough to stay. We ate in restaurants along the promenade, couldn't fault the food. Naples was our base. One day we did Pompeii tour. Watch out for thieves on the Pompeii train, we were targeted by 2 guys but luckily managed with help of others. Next day we bought NLG ferry Tour1 to Amalfi and Positano. good value with 3 hrs in Amalfi and 2 hrs in Positano to explore. Too much litter (resulting in too many rats and cockroaches). Too much vandalism. Too many homeless people and beggars. Not enough done to showcase the things that tourists would like to see such as fountains and statues (many were covered up as though they were being worked on or renovated). Naples generally appears very neglected. However, a more affordable base for visiting Pompei, Amalfi, Positano & Sorrento by train.
