My weekend trip in Whangamata was fantastic, I honestly wished I had gotten to stay longer since it's such a lovely town. The beach, which is great for surfing and walks, is a huge part of the town, so staying near it is important. This is a family beach holiday destination.
This is a family beach holiday destination. Very down to earth and firmly rooted in the surfing culture. Once a year in Match / April they have a Festival called the Beach Hop which is the largest classic and vintage car meet in NZ and includes music and 1950 / 60’s dance competitions. Classic Cars and their owners were all drifing in to town while we were there - it looked like it would be a spectacular event. Whangamata is a small town but has everything you need, several good restaurants and cafes, shops and bars. The beach is beautiful, sandy, wide and safe. It is totally unspoiled. There is a small harbour, lots of fishing and boat rides. The surrounding countryside and views are magnificent. Whangamata can give you what you want, whether its a quiet peaceful time or a bit of a night out. Lovely walks whether ir is a beach, forest or hill walk. Golf course, cycling tracks, or just a gentle stroll on the beautiful beach. Lots of cafes, places to eat, like European, Thai, Indian, Turkish Kebab or fish & chips as well as 3 clubs in town for a small fee can enjoy a drink as well as lovely food.
