History and Sandy Algarve Beaches
With a long and rich history, Lagos is nowadays a famous beach resort of the sunny Portuguese region of Algarve. Including wide sandy beaches and quiet coves enclosed by ochre cliffs, it also offers a lively city centre with one of the best mixes between history and modernity in the region.
King Henry the Navigator chose it as a base for his trips of discovery during the 15th century, and later on, it became the residence of the Algarve governors. The Old Town is circled by medieval walls, typical narrow streets, historic buildings and charming squares. B&B’s and hotels in Lagos’s historic centre allow you to enjoy these picturesque surroundings.
Apart from being an important centre for sailing, the city has amazing beaches, like Meia Praia or Praia da Dona Ana. I don't know any other town with so many little places all interconnected with several small streets - you feel like discovering something new every few minutes! From the towns we visited (Faro, Albufeira, Portimao) I'm very happy we went to Lagos: it's nicer than Faro, less touristic than Albufeira and more interesting than Portimao. Everything's clean, most shops are driven by natives, and you have great food for reasonable prices. Everyone is very nice, and it is a good mix of supporting tourists, but feeling like you can truly immerse yourself in the culture. 10/10. Do not miss Pinhao Restaurant and Bar! A bustling town with plenty to do, we found having a car helpful as there are beaches spread out over a few miles. There are plenty of choices for restaurants from high end to cheap and cheerful. The beaches are clean and beautiful although there are nearly no public toilets which we found unfortunate, we travelled throughout Portugal and found this normal. Wear comfortable and non slip shoes, there are quite a few hills with small cobbled tiles that can be fairly slippery. There are some beautiful wooden walkways along the coast where you can explore some of the fantastic coves, great for nature lovers and fantastic for photo opportunities. A tourist town with a historic core that is an ideal base for exploring the western Algarve. There is public transport, but it is better to have a car. You can explore the beaches towards Capo Sao Vicente and the beaches north of it. However, you should take into account that the water is still relatively cold in July - max. 19 degrees and there is often a wind that makes you feel cold in your swimsuit on the beach. There are excellent fish restaurants everywhere, I personally recommend Ribeira do Poço in Vila do Dispo.Guest review byJanaCzech Republic
