Nice historical city.
Nice historical city. Rich history of rice crops making it wealthiest city in the south. I loved the Barbados inspired architecture of homes with side porches. Enjoyed learning of the Gullah Geechee culture and the seagrass baskets. Quaint town and great food as well as beautiful scenery. The best part about Charleston is all the history. The buildings, house streets they all have so much character. The entire city is beautiful. You can shop, sightsee, or just sit along the shoreline. With only 24 hours in Charleston, we visited during the Southern heatwave of July 2025 so hot weather curbed our activities. With temperatures of 100F and 87% humidity it was too hot to do many of the things we would have liked. However a carriage ride around the French Quarter, with Palmetto Carriages' knowledgeable driver Elliot, gave us a taste of this historical district. Would recommend Anson Cafe (actually a big restaurant) near the market. Lovely food and excellent service. And of course, the French Quarter Inn. We were interested in history and food, and we were immersed in both. Saw Ft. Sumpter, an antebellum mansion and a plantation. What was expected. It was fun shopping at The Market and King Street. It was nice seeing the Pineapple Fountain and Rainbow Row. We visited The Boone Plantation and loved it. July is a super hot time of year to visit.
July is a super hot time of year to visit. However we were always close to AC or the ocean, which made it bearable. Downtown area is nice with several shops, parks, and historical buildings. The beach (we went to Isle of Palms) wasn’t too crowded and we were close by to Shem creek with a nice boardwalk and great restaurants. There’s multiple ways to get around and tour the city such as horse drawn carriage, boats and busses.Guest review byAnonymous
