Hanksville has lots of wonderful outdoor activities in and around the town, particularly Capitol Reef National Park and Goblin Valley State Park. If you aren't outdoorsy or active, there might not be much to do for you. The town itself is quite small, and not everything is open in the winter. It is cute and has character, but is not exactly exciting.

The little town of Hanksville (pop. 1800), in the heart of Southern Utah, near Goblin Valley State Park (must see!) and not far from Capitol Reef National Park, is a surprising gem. Home of an intriguing collection of scrap-metal dinosaurs, now presented in the context of peace and spirituality (their creator is deceased), it also sports a seriously good rock shop and the Bull Mountain Market that features an art gallery (!), where I found two pieces I just had to buy (cheap!) by Nathan Maire, who also sells polished fossils and geodes.

The drive from Natural Bridges NM to Hanksville was spectacular! Hanksville not particularly scenic, but we arrived early and took a ride up to Goblin Valley SP, about 30 miles one way (all paved). Easy drive to Capitol Reef NP the following day.
