The Hopi people are probably the most resiliant and amount the strongest native peoples I've met. They are friendly and welcoming, as long as you respect their culture and homeland. These are authentic villages, inhabited by these people for 100s of years. It is rugged terrain, so don't expect cushy comfort. Enter in the right way and you will be amazed and enriched by your experience.

I think that every US citizen should visit the Hopi mesas and learn more about the history. Shongopovi is a great location from which to do this. We went on a guided tour of Walpi, which is very close by. It is one of the 'old original' hilltop villages, which has been preserved without the addition of electricity or running water. Although I don't think many people live there full time, the houses have functioning stoves, and the village is used for ceremonies. You cannot see it without a guide. We just showed up, and caught an existing tour, but we got lucky. I recommend scheduling one in advance. You can get names of authorized tour guides from the Hopi Cultural Center. The tour was very informative and enjoyable. I think it ran about an hour, and it cost $40/adult and $20/child. Bring a hat and water, as there's little shade up there!
