We went to Bulungula for the second time and we were surprised to see how things have improved. Our Rondavel was very cozy and we felt very welcome at the lodge. The Tours offered by local peole are amazing and our guides were incredibly friendly and answered all our questions. Another big plus was the food; from breakfast to dinner we always ate wonderful local food! Also the road to Bulungula seems to have been improved from last time. Still a bit challenging at some places but absolutely doable, even for small cars.

We had 3 weeks holidays in South Africa crossing the country by car and staying in many places. But when I asked my family what was the best accommodation, the Black Rock was on the top of the list. The Two-Bedroom House is spacious and very well equipped. Wood for BBQ was prepared before our arrival. The ocean view from the bedrooms and the terrace is amazing.

    Definitely take cash with you.

Definitely take cash with you. There are many tours and expeditions you can book with the local community and they only accept cash. It's also a good idea to bring comfortable shoes. Usually you park in a designated spot and walk to the accommodation. They can make an exception when unpacking and packing the vehicle but when the rain comes the road to the lodge is even a challenge for a proper 4x4 because of the grass. Other than that, bring an adventurous spirit and a willingness to explore new things. Also, don't give handouts to those who ask you. It will go against what the community is trying to achieve for themselves. If you want to give, then give to the lodge so that they can distribute the gifts the proper way.

The place is in a good location this is undeniable fact.

The place is in a good location this is undeniable fact. The staff though has no care whatsoever about the guest .If you booked in you will be just treated as one of the locals, there is no manager in charge. so staff do as they please. WARNING !!! The roads are very bad only accessed by 4x4,the staff do not bother check in on you . You are on your own please consider this. Towing services are 3 hours away , the local towing truck are not easy to get as they are familiar with the bad road conditions. most roads are not shown on gps. So you will rely on locals mostly.
