Informace o okolí
Telde is 13 kilometres from the island's capital. It is the largest and most populated municipality in the eastern region of the island of Gran Canaria.
The municipality of Telde stands out for its numerous archaeological remains, due to the fact that this area was, in pre-Hispanic times, one of the two kingdoms into which the island of Gran Canaria was divided. The area has archaeological sites such as Baladero, Tufia, Cuatro Puertas, Tara and Cendro.
To visit the historic centre of the municipality of Telde, a stroll through the Barrio de San Juan neighbourhood, which is the foundational nucleus of the city, is a must. The main civil and religious buildings are located around the primitive Church of San Juan Bautista and the Plaza Mayor.
The Church of San Juan stands out for its Main Chapel, a work made up of two altarpieces, one Gothic-Flemish and the other from the 18th century that frames the previous one. In it is the crucified Christ, imported from America and made according to an Indian technique, with millet paste. And the brush triptych brought from Flanders in the 16th century.
Also of note in this enclave is the Church of San Pedro Mártir de Verona, a 16th century Gothic-Renaissance style building, which is now an exhibition centre. Also worthy of special attention is the Casa Museo de León y Castillo, the birthplace of the brothers Fernando and Juan de León y Castillo, prominent figures of the 19th and 20th centuries.
In the neighbourhood of San Francisco, an essential visit, a neighbourhood made up of narrow streets characterised by low houses with gabled roofs and long whitewashed walls. The Church of San Francisco stands out with its Christ of the Agony, a work of Sevillian origin with its welcoming Plaza de los Romeros.
The historical visit ends in the Barrio de San Gregorio, the settlement point of the merchants and artisans. The Church of San Gregorio stands out for its neoclassical altarpieces and the carving of the Virgen de los Dolores.
