Karelia Lakeland Cottages
Welcome to your serene getaway in the heart of Finland! Escape to a place where nature sets the pace. These charming lakeside cottages offer an idyllic retreat nestled on a peaceful island in the untouched beauty of North Karelia. Far from the noise of everyday life, our cabins provide the perfect setting for true relaxation and connection with nature. Step into the rhythm of the wilderness—start your day with a soothing wood-fired sauna, then take a refreshing swim in the crystal-clear lake just steps from your door. The shoreline, with its gentle slope and smooth stone bottom, makes getting in and out of the water easy and inviting. As evening falls, gather around the firepit under the stars. A hammock strung between the trees offers the perfect place to unwind, sway gently, and watch the light dance across the water—ideal for reading, napping, or simply being still. The surrounding Finnish forest is yours to explore. Depending on the season, the woods are full of wild blueberries, lingonberries, and mushrooms, offering a delicious way to engage with the land. Whether you’re a seasoned forager or just curious, you’ll find nature’s treasures close at hand. The cabins are located on the tranquil island of Ruopansaari, about 400 meters from the mainland. Since the cabins sit on the far side of the island, reaching them is part of the adventure. You can choose to row directly across (~400 m) and embark on a 2 km hike through the island's heart along a true forest. This trail is offering an authentic and immersive trek for those who love to explore. Note that the trail is not maintained and can be challenging. Alternatively, for a more direct journey, you can row the scenic route around the island (approximately 3.5–4 km by water). Whichever path you choose, the journey is an unforgettable part of the experience. A rowing boat, maps, and picture instructions are provided to guide your way.
Guests at our cabins will enjoy the natural beauty of Höytiäinen Lake, an idyllic spot for swimming, fishing, or simply relaxing by the water. The lake’s peaceful surroundings, framed by lush forests, offer a perfect escape into nature. You can start your day with a quiet row on the calm waters or spend the afternoon enjoying the serene landscape. For a day trip, Koli National Park is nearby, offering stunning views of Finland's lake district from the famous Ukko-Koli viewpoint. The park’s trails are ideal for hiking during summer or cross-country skiing in winter, making it a popular spot for outdoor lovers. A visit to Paateri Church, designed by sculptor Eva Ryynänen, provides a unique cultural experience. This beautifully crafted wooden church is a peaceful place to explore, and the intricate woodwork is a testament to Ryynänen’s artistic genius. For those who love walking, Polvijärvi's nature trails wind through the area’s forests and meadows, offering a variety of routes for all hiking levels. These trails are perfect for taking in the tranquil countryside and spotting local wildlife. The region also offers traditional Finnish cuisine at local restaurants. Ravintola Puukarin Pysäkki serves delicious meals made from fresh, local ingredients, including fish from the lakes and wild game. Near Koli, Nature Café Mandala provides a charming spot to enjoy local flavors in a cozy atmosphere. In the winter, the area turns into a magical wonderland, where guests can experience ice fishing, cross-country skiing, and snowshoeing across the snow-covered landscapes. The quiet of the Finnish winter creates an unforgettable atmosphere for guests seeking a peaceful retreat. Whether you're here for outdoor adventures, cultural discoveries, or simply to unwind in nature, Höytiäinen Lake and its surroundings offer an authentic Finnish experience.
