In 1988 the present owners bought the house as an almost derelict property and over the next two years developed it into a substantial private residence, also buying 14 ½ acres of adjacent stubble field which has been extensively landscaped to provide a rich and varied wildlife habitat. Every blade of grass; shrub; tree; hedge; pond; fountain; flower bed; paddock and gate have been lovingly planned and put there by us, by hand. All of the planting, both large and small has been focused on two things: the need to provide something pleasing to the eye and a deep desire to create a wildlife habitat in keeping with this region. In 1991 Pointers enjoyed the distinction of receiving a national Wildlife Conservation Award. In what used to be a bare stubble field we now have our ‘own’ Skylarks, Goldfinches, Song Thrushes, Woodpeckers, Wrens, Wild Ducks, Kingfishers, Herons, Badgers, Deer, Butterflies and Moths as well as much, much more. Don’t be alarmed if a Sparrow Hawk or Swallow zips by as you wait for the door to be answered. Be prepared for a silent white shadow of the passing Barn Owls as evening draws in – especially when their young are asking to be fed.
We are passionate about our home and garden. We enjoy being surrounded by wildlife and look forward to the different times of each year as birds and animals come and go. Most of all, we derive great satisfaction in helping others to appreciate what we like most - our home and the tranquility of nature that surrounds it.
Ideally situated in the gateway to East Anglia, Pointers provides the perfect base for exploring the many historic attractions within the area or a welcome stop for those travelling from the ports of Felixstowe, Harwich and Dover to the north of England and Scotland. Visit the famous Cambridge Colleges. In Peterborough you can see a reconstructed Bronze-Age village at Flag Fen. There are also cathedrals to explore at Peterborough and Ely, plus the nearby birthplace and former homes of Oliver Cromwell. We are situated on the edge of the Great Fen – a wildlife development of international importance. Other attractions include RSPB reserves; a Raptor Centre at St. Ives; Ramsey Rural Museum; Houghton Water Mill; Angelsey Abbey; the Nene Valley Steam Railway; Huntingdon Racecourse; Duxford Imperial War Museum; Wimpole Hall; Newmarket Horse Racing Museum - there really is something for everyone. For the more sporting individual, you may choose to try coarse or fly-fishing on local waters, where sailing may also be found. Go-karting and hot-air ballooning is available locally and there are a number of marinas, which offer boat hire and other facilities. We have excellent golf courses.
