Provender is a typical wood-framed farm building, clad in weather boarding outside and tongue and groove inside. It sits at the highest point of the farmland and its french doors open onto glorious views of ancient woodland and distant fields. Its small proportions belie the facilities it offers. This is the perfect cottage for weekends and short breaks … end your day in beautiful Sussex with a glass of wine on the deck as the shadows lengthen across the fields. The smallest of the cottages: a typical wood-framed farm building. The main room has french doors that open onto a glorious view of ancient woodland and fields. It has a two ring hob, microwave, toaster and kettle above an under surface fridge, with freezer compartment. The bathroom has toilet, basin and walk-in shower. There is a boot rack and two bike stands just outside the front door. Provender is in the farmstead of Old Church Farm. There are two other cottages and our farmhouse in the farmstead. All are separate and not directly overlooking each other. You can use the grounds but please be mindful of others' privacy. The barbeque area is shared by and central to the three cottages.
We live in the farmhouse. The ancient farmstead has not been a working farm for fifty years. We encourage wildlife and have wild areas in the grounds and meadow grass to help conserve insect life. We feed a large number of birds and the place is full of birdsong. We think this place is like a haven from the world outside and enjoy being able to share the peace and tranquillity with people staying. Everywhere is private and you can be quite on your own.
The farmhouse dates from around 1540 and was once owned by the Sackville family. In earlier times the Cinque Ports’ commercial court was held here, which was known in consequence as “The Guestling”. This tranquil rural retreat is sheltered by undulating hills and ancient woodland. Wildlife abounds: rabbits, badgers, ducks, moorhens, pheasants and many species of bird. With the flint Norman Church to one side and uninterrupted distant rural views to the other, the location of these stylish Sussex cottages is very special, secluded and quiet. Yet only two miles away in Ore, there is an Aldi, Tesco, Co-op, chemist and fast-food outlets. The area around Old Church Farm has an exceptional number of ancient pubs and hostelries, many with CAMRA awards, serving good local food. Dogs are accommodated by arrangement – please enquire.
