We loved the quaint little cottage. The location is a little out of the way but we thought that was part if the charm of the place. The family who run it were easily contactable and resolved a minor issue immediately. The view is incredible and...

Stunning location and a complete switch off for us all. We took two dogs with us and the location was just perfect. Very clean and comfortable and would have no hesitation in recommending Barleycorn Cottage. Even though I struggle with mobility...

The location is even better than the photos suggest. The stream runs right beside the properties and is pretty vigorous. It actually provides power via some sort of turbine. It was deep enough for our Springer Spaniel to have a little swim, which...

Reconnect with nature, it’s old land here and the pretty Gara Brook runs through it all down to Slapton Ley National Nature Reserve. There’s no light pollution, so the stargazing is heavenly! Look for kingfishers, glow-worms, dippers, otters, trout, yellow wagtails, and dormice. Build a dam or paddle in the stream. And as there’s no through traffic, it’s a green lane beyond us, it’s so peaceful and safe for pets and kids to play. Plus we’re dog-friendly, flexible on the number of dogs too. Tastefully converted from the former mill building, barns & workers’ cottages around a mill-house built in the 1750s, each cottage offers thick stone walls, beams, deep slate sills and a logburner. Individual in decor yet spacious, comfortable accommodation with a modern fitted kitchen (with own washing machine, microwave, electric oven or range, kettle, toaster, fridge-freezer), and bathrooms with baths and showers. All cottages enjoy private fenced gardens or patios, have logburners, bbqs and outdoor seating. You’re welcome to make the most of the shared streamside lawns where there’s more seating. Wander round the valley, or walk up to Strete to the pub, it’s only 40 minutes and has great sea views. Or simply relax in your own cottage garden. Feel real peace here in a tranquil valley almost untouched by the modern world. A sustainable holiday too – a water turbine generates electricity using the old mill leat and there’s free electric car charging for guests. Watermill Cottages is perfect for getting away from it all. A sustainable coastal retreat, eco-friendly, for real peace and quiet, yet close to Slapton Sands & many other beaches, picturesque Devon villages with good restaurants, cafes and pubs. We invite you to share the soothing natural energy of our unique and beautiful valley, to relax and revitalise in the heart of mother nature, away from traffic and the white noise of TVs and mobiles. Holidays like they used to be, space to relax, play and explore.
Rediscover what life is all about as you relax and unwind in one of our pretty, comfy Watermill Cottages in the unspoilt coastal Gara Valley. Just a 10 minute drive to Slapton Sands, near Dartmouth in the heart of South Hams Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB). A shallow trout stream, private cottage gardens, shared streamside lawns, orchard & meadows, ancient woods between mill leat & brook, and green lane walks from your cottage door. Set in 6 stunning rural acres yet close to Dartmouth, Kingsbridge, Salcombe and Totnes. Watermill Cottages lies three miles inland from Slapton village on the South Devon coast, between Kingsbridge and Dartmouth in The South Hams AONB. Slapton and Strete are the closest villages, each with a good village shop. Strete has The King’s Arms village-owned pub, dog-friendly with great sea views from the garden and a kids’ play area. It’s a forty minute walk from Watermill Cottages on green lanes and fields with amazing scenery. Slapton has two dog-friendly, welcoming pubs which offer food: The Queen’s Arms with a west-facing beer garden and The Tower Inn with walled garden. Join the The Coast Path for dramatic seascapes, explore green lanes, Dartmoor’s stone circles and wild ponies, footpaths and tracks. Explore local markets, wine and cheese producers, and the independent quirky shops and motte-and-bailey castle in Totnes. Try ferryhopping in Dartmouth, chill out on the beaches – so many to choose from. Wander round Dartmouth, Salcombe or Totnes and treat yourself to a cream tea.
