At Akaokan, guests can relax in the spacious public hot-spring baths and visit the Historic Villages of Shirakawa-gō and Gokayama, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, situated a 20-minute drive away. Village housings feature Ainokura Gassho-style architecture. Japanese Yukata robes are provided for all guests. JR Johana Train Station is a 30-minute drive away. Free WiFi access is offered in public areas. Guests can choose to stay in Japanese-style rooms with Japanese futon bedding, or in rooms with a tatami area, which feature tatami (woven-straw) flooring and Western beds. Rooms are air-conditioned with a flat-screen TV, refrigerator and an en suite bathroom. Bath towels and bath amenities are provided. A souvenir shop is available for guests to purchase local gifts and drink vending machines are on-site. The front desk provides photocopying services. A traditional multi-course meal is served for dinner and a Japanese set-menu for breakfast. All meals are served at the dining room. Akaokan Ryokan is a 5-minute free shuttle ride from Suganuma Historic Village. Nishi-Akao Bus Stop is the closest bus stop, situated beside Akaokan Ryokan. Tour buses from Shirakawa-go to JR Takaoka Station depart 5 times a day.
