Company information

Dave came to Sri Lanka in January 2009 as a VSO volunteer supporting local peace and human rights organisations helping Sinhala, Tamil and Muslim communities heal and move forward together after the 35 year civil war here which ended in May 2009. Sengli is an English teacher and an ethnic Kachin from Myanmar who worked with Dave in Myanmar in the rights field. They both love Sri Lanka, the world of tea, and entertaining our guests. We very much look forward to entertaining you and helping you sample the real hill country tea estate village life of Sri Lanka together with gorgeous food, walks, mountain biking, or just enjoying the peace and tranquility here. All this is a historic colonial setting.

Property information

Gammaduwa Bungalow is 120 yeas old and was the residence of the British owner of the 4000 acre Gammaduwa Tea plantation. It was recently inspected by the Tourist Board and awarded "Delux Heritage Bungalow" status. It lies in 7 acres of traditional tea estate land. We produce our own brand of tea for guests to enjoy. We have renovated it keeping the character and most of the original feature like concentric square mahogany ceilings, brick red floors, beamed hallways and glass skylights intact. It is situated at 2700 feet in the hills overlooking Riverston and the Knuckles Mountain Range with spectacular mountain views from the 560 square foot veranda and bedrooms. We offer Sri Lankan foods cooked in traditional ways and some specialty dishes we know you will enjoy. If you want a change from Asian dishes there is a daily western alternative to whet your appetite. There is a serve-yourself Guest Refreshment Corner in each room with water, tea, and coffee for free. A selection of drinks and snacks can be bought from us or guests are welcome to bring their own. These can be stored in the small fridge in each room. Finally, don't miss our complementary British Afternoon Tea at 4pm where we serve our own award winning teas with homemade cake, finger sandwiches, and biscuits.

Neighbourhood information

The bungalow is an excellent spot for walking, mountain biking (provided), river swimming, or just chilling out. Just step out of your room and onto the rear path through our estate to find yourself on walks with views, lush fruit trees, towering mahogany trees, village Hindu shrines, wild buffalo and if your lucky you may see the wild deer and boar too. Alternatively you could work alongside our Tamil Tea Team learning how to pluck, wither, hand roll, dry, and drink your own handmade tea. The Riverston peak with 'little world's end' and Knuckles Mountain Range and conservation park are nearby as is Bambarkiriella waterfalls with large rock pools to swim or dangle your feet in and get what the locals call a "fish massage". You can take a village bus to Rattota town where you will be the only non Sri Lankan and made most welcome. Perhaps sample the Rice & Curry lunch at a local cafe, or visit the Hindu temple there, then get a tuc-tuc home, There are also direct local buses, to Matale Town (1h) for the magnificent Budhist mountain temple. Kandy (Budhist temple of the tooth) , the holy city, is only 2.5h away by village bus. We have tuc tuc drivers and a taxi/coach firm who will do this also if you wish
