TENZAL ( ‘it shall’ in old Dutch) was conceived as a combination between old and contemporary colonial style making use of natural stone (no visible concrete), matured recycled wood such as doors, windows and beams, as well as the profuse application of rare satin wood, kumbuk and ebony, even in kitchens and bathrooms, and genuine antique furniture. Your step back in the past enjoying nature as well as modern comfort.
The 3 guest rooms occupy the entire first floor where the lobby displays a very rare old bell-studded kovil door as well as a kohombe/satin/ebony Jaffna door (150 kg).
The entrance door (satin/ebony) features a salvaged temple door lock and leads to a stone staircase next to an old washing basin and period rubbing stone.
After climbing the –easy- stair we enter the ground floor dining area leadingalso to the front side porch and the Bougainville garden with an out of this world Uva valley panorama, including Mount Pedro, Fox Hill
The rear door of the ground floor leads to a 1st terrace where 4 stairs take guests to garden via a koi-pond, a terrace and a summer hut. The garden, with bench, features a variety of fruit tr
The island’s interior, especially the spectacular tea country, has stayed rather untouched, leaving quite a bit of lush and unspoiled landscape especially for TENZAL with a view from the Indian Ocean (clear weather needed) in the southern rooms to the impressive Uva valley in the northern rooms.
The four rooms, adoringly decorated in a fusion style of antique furniture placed in modern comfort, are spread over 2 floors, each with their own character. Either way they’re just right either as an entrée into the legend of the Sri Lankan colonial past, or as a break out — this mountainous landscape, with a vista from some 4500 feet above sea level, is out-of-the-way indeed, and shows hardly any signs of encroaching modernity.
The choice here is what, if anything, to do. Tours of the tea fields (trekking starts at the gate!) and factories can be arranged, as can all manner of outdoor expeditions, from bird watching to mountain climbing. Then again, so plush are the accommodations, so roomy and comfy the rooms and suite, that several guests will have a hard time fancying doing much more than enjoying the terraces or the 2 gardens.
And eating and drinking, of course
