Whangarei had just had some massive rain so we had a lovely waterfall right next to the yurt that was cool. It is off grid so facilities are minimal but they were sufficient.

The Yurt at Wai Rua, west of Whangarei, is approximately 20 minutes drive from Kamo via Pipiwai Road. It is set in a beautiful tranquil farmland area beside a small lake, which is surrounded by native trees. Watch the native birds, ducks and pukekos whilst sitting on the deck. It has amazing rural views, including massive volcanic rocks. The yurt has a separate kitchen and bathroom facilities, with a hot water shower and composting toilet. The water can be drunk as it is filtered through professional system. There is all weather access for vehicles to drive to and park by the yurt. There is access to a salt water solar heated swimming pool. There are gravel roads for walking or biking throughout the 80 acres on this property. Guests will be able to wander through the lovely garden and bush areas. They will also be able to meet the friendly pigs and hens. There is also a barbecue for further cooking. It also has some electricity from a solar panel. There is no wifi at the yurt. All windows have insect screens. For a winter retreat there is a fireplace in the fully wool insulated yurt, along with an external wood burning hot tub under the trees which is an optional extra. Breakfast foods which are mostly organic and grown on the property will be provided as part of the stay. Check in is anytime after 2.00 p.m and there is no formal check in process. Just arrive and relax
Allan and Elaine purchased Wai Rua in 2015, having been instantly impressed with both the spirituality of the location and the unique diversity in the landscape. Allan is a true-blue kiwi, originally from the Golden Bay area of New Zealand. A practical, ‘no.8 wire’ man of the land and sea, Allan’s passion for the New Zealand natural environment began at a very young age in the North West of the South Island, with hunting, fishing, sailing and farming running in his blood. Elaine, however, has lived in Whangarei/Northland most of her life, and knows the community and the land intimately. Her connection with Wai Rua and the surrounding area is deep and profound, and her desire is simply to bring more people in to share this special place. With a sympathetic eye for preserving Wai Rua’s beauty, Elaine and Allan have built upon the existing landscaping to create one of Northland’s finest natural retreat locations.
Whangarei as a city has plenty to offer along with in its surrounding district a number of beautiful beaches and walking/hiking tracks. These are all within an hours travel. We are also located one hour from the Bay of Islands, which is an excellent day trip activity. The Poor Knights Marine Reserve is 40 minutes away and certainly well worth a visit especially if you enjoy snorkelling or diving or just a boat trip visit. Tane Mahuta the huge Kauri tree in the Waipoua Forest is approximately an hour and a half away by car and also an amazing experience. Our local are is mostly dairy farmland.
