Artful Lodging & Retreats is located in a family neighborhood on a quiet street, 10 minutes' walk to downtown Montpelier, the nation's smallest capital. There are mountain views from the backyard, and beautiful gardens all around. Our inn is near the VCFA green, a great place for throwing a frisbee or kicking a ball around. The building belonged to the Commandant of Montpelier's Civil War Infirmary, The Sloan Hospital, and was rolled down the street on logs in the 1870's. I am an architect, and designed and built and a series of additions through the last 25 years, creating these beautiful apartments, leaving the original historic house intact but with updated modern conveniences. Each apartment is furnished with classic New England antiques and an original art collection from my travels around the world (plus some of my own paintings). The apartments are pet-free and perfume-free, each with their own fully equipped kitchen and bathroom including many toiletry items. In the summer months there are air conditioners in all the bedrooms. Guests have access to the beautiful back yard, with its gardens and amazing view of the gold dome of the capital building and Camel's Hump mountain.
I am an architect and love this historic house. I have spent the last 25 years designing and remodeling additions and alterations to arrive at what you see today. It is so much fun sharing with others from around the world this unique and beautiful inn, a classic New England home.
People in Vermont are very friendly, and you will receive many greetings as you walk the street and feel immediately right at home. It is quiet and safe here. Kids enjoy the many local events and festivals and our wonderful library.
