Company information

I started off my career as a high school teacher, teaching English and History. Then left education to work in the banking sector. While still working for one of the large commercial banks, I decided that I needed a career change. As I am an outgoing and extrovert personality, and enjoy meeting, interacting and getting to know people, I decided that the best career would be in the hospitality industry. As part of my career change, I also qualified as a cultural tour guide for Gauteng province so am able to assist guests with tours or else advice and information as to what to see and do in Joburg. Part of being a tour guide means that I am licensed to shuttle guests and so offer a shuttle service - collecting and dropping off at the airport, places of business, shopping or tourist sites.

Property information

The property started off as a farm and the initial house had a long passage which used to be cows' milking shed. Since that time, 1906, the property and house has changed. When I inherited the property from my parents, I demolished the old house as it did not comply with certain building regulations and built a modern, double storey home. Once I decided to change it from exclusively a home into a bed and breakfast, I made extensive changes to the individual bedrooms by making them bigger, adding en suite bathrooms and balconies. I am delighted with the result and many guests say that it feels like home - comfortable and relaxing!

Neighbourhood information

Melville is a fairly old suburb, being more than 100 years old. There are a variety of styles of houses with many of the very old, original homes still in existence. Today, it is an eclectic mix of styles, architecture and people which makes it interesting and enjoyable. My bed and breakfast has a view of the Melville Koppies, which is an open area where many people walk their dogs, jog or simply walk to the top in order to get a lovely view of the central business district of Joburg, Rosebank, Sandton and in the distance, the Magaliesberg mountain range. There is access at the bottom of my road and many guests have enjoyed the experience. I am also about a 5 minute walk from 7th Street and 4th Avenue which hosts coffee shops, book shops, restaurants, pubs and cocktail lounges. There is also a new development called 27 Boxes, made from old shipping containers, which has an assortment of interesting and unique shops. A further 10 minute walk will take you to Campus Square Shopping Centre where there are banks, chain stores, more restaurants and mobile phone stores. So lots to see and do in Melville!
