Best place to stay when in Crete if you are looking for a mix of relaxation at the beach and exploring the island. Great sandy beaches, cool beach bars, beautiful old town filled with vibrant clubs and restaurants. The town is ideally placed so that you can rent a car, pay for an excursion or even use public transport (which is beautufly organised) to explore wild beaches but Chania and Heraklion as well.Guest review byMiljanSerbia - 10.0

Plakias is a small town, out of the way and just what we like. Reminiscent of Katelios on Kefalonia but a much bigger beach, with a quite well catered for naturist section at the southern end with two sunbeds and a parasol for EUR 9 per day or space to bring your own. The central to northern beach is mostly sunbed city but in this case the sand and sun are so hot you really need them. In late August, the sea was mostly calm but the wind can get up and waves got fairly strong at times. I visited the beach bar daily for liquid refreshment and the local beer mamos is perfect and EUR 5 for 500ml(?) seemed fair at this remote location. There is a small section of shops, bars and restaurants at the north end f town. We particularly liked Sofia's restaurant due to it's shorefront location, but we had nice meals elsewhere too. The area round the shops has been prettied up with a colourful fountain that children enjoyed playing in. Although hilly and winding roads dominate the whole region, the main street through town is a steady incline and no problem for most people. Photos are taken from the southern end of the beach.Guest review byNeilUnited Kingdom - 10.0

This is quite an expensive area to stay in, with no chain supermarkets nearby and fully privatized beaches. However, the surroundings are extremely beautiful. There’s a bakery-coffee shop that’s great for local baked goods and budget-friendly coffees and sandwiches. We stayed one day in Balion, which was perfectly enough for us.Guest review byZorluerNetherlands - 10.0
Adorable, quaint and full of charm.
Adorable, quaint and full of charm. At night the village centre close the roads, bring out the tables and chairs and the streets are filled with the sights, smells and sounds of Cretan joy. One of the places I will miss the most and can’t wait to return too.Guest review byAnnastasia - 10.0

Great Cretan village -- has everything you need: pharmacy, bakeries, butcher, supermarket, many tavernas, great stores with Cretan art, pottery, olive wood, olive oil, spices, and so on. You can also get airport transfers and take buses to other parts of the island!Guest review byRobertUnited States - 8.0

Tourist destination, really close to the main city of Rethimno, without the hustle and bustle of the city. And with plenty of car parking! Our main. reason for visiting the area was because we were attending a wedding. I did find that Adelianos Kampos was located near to a lot of pick ups for tours around Crete to allow you to experience other areas around the island. Many places to eat around the area, but none that really stuck out for me that I would recommend. Just walk around the area because there is much to choose from.Guest review byBabetteUnited States - 8.0

It's a quiet village with very friendly people and along the beach road you very quickly arrive at the next village that has a mini market and 3 or 4 tavernas. It's not for people looking for nightlife and shops. A car is needed to get there and to be able to go to bigger town with shops and other sights of interest. Our favourite places in Rodakino were Korakas beach cafe; Super market Zafeirakis where the lady was friendly and helpful and Nikos & Anna Taverna. Just a little further away the taverna at Peristeres beach is definitely my favourite place to eat.Guest review byTemplar - 8.0

Rethymno is a vibrant small town, with scenic remnants of a multicultural past and a bunch of restaurants with plenty of choices. Although I do not enjoy much going to the beach, a great one could be found in the east of the city. The fortress is a must go, as are the old town and the mini (yet quite inclusive) archaeological museum, that manages to summarize key aspects of the town's history. For the well informed and culturally aware visitor, exploring and discovering signs and relics indicative of a multiplexed past comprising of ottoman, venician and byzantine remnants (set the ancient greek ones apart), more or less obvious, can be absolutely fascinating. I really enjoyed walking in the old town and the fortress, discovering the mosques, finding old ottoman inscriptions on marble and stone and chilling in the municipal garden (a hidden gem, away from the noisy, overstimulating, tourist-packed old town). For somebody that wants to chill out, eat and drink, there are also plenty of choices.Guest review byNikistratos
