Lovely spacious rooms, helpful kind staff, Meals were well prepared and the afternoon tea on check in was a lovely touch. View from room and outdoor bath was stunning, so special. Staff very helpful when we needed extra help to contact local onsen, they were so kind and called ahead for us so we could keep our booking on very short notice.

The location was great for me. Very cheap place to stay, with lots of parking... and the nearby food options were amazing. If I ever visit the area, I will be staying here. It is a great hotel to stay at solo or even with a partner as the bed is large. They offer food voucher for one free meal per day, and have onsite laundry and vending machines.

Loved the efficient and prompt check in service. Staff could speak English and were very helpful. Lunch and dinner at the restaurant was terrific with great service from the restaurant staff. Favourite hostel I've stayed in a month of travelling japan. Absolutely beautiful location, near the dam so I was able to catch the sunrise easily and some cool night shots (check out the stars at night). Not far from the main street and some good onsens e.g. Sekizenkan Kashoutei which inspired Spirited Away, about 20-30mins walk to nearest ATM at a post office though so make sure you have enough cash. Quiet when I was there, only one other person in my dorm. I liked that in the 'dorm' you basically got a mini room instead of a capsule, seperated by a curtain and wall with no ceiling. Plenty of space. But the privacy was nice, bed was comfy, lockers provided. Kitchen was good and there were vending machines on site, could also buy snacks and souvenirs from reception which helped as nearby shops and restaurants have changeable hours. Staff were super friendly with pretty good English although sometimes hard to find. Onsen was beautiful and often had it all to myself, outdoors onsen under maple leaves was super nice. Could hire private sauna at the top too which was cool, has a cold bath as well and toilet/shower. Wish I could have stayed longer!

Excellent place to stay. Magnificent onsen and ski slopes. This hotel is a perfect place for people who love skiing and look for open-air onsen. Buffet breakfast and dinner are great. You can eat crab as much as you can. Open-air bath is very beautiful. Ski-in ski-out hotel. Acess to the hotel is convenient via shuttle bus from Karuizawa station.

Chojukan has excellent quality water, at perfect temperature. The outside onsen mostly operates as women-only (men only before 7 am). The rooms in the old building are small but well maintained, and the sink is inside (toilet outside). Meals are simple, executed very nicely. In sum, the waters are the main attraction.

Nice location to visit for max two days, touristic but not too over-crowded and people in general very friendly. Some of the Onsen are amazing - if you like it - and the ski resort (if open since top part closes fast with some wind and snow) is small and somewhat outdated, but still nice for 1-2 days. Some restaurants offer good value for money, but reserve on time and be prepared to have diner around 18/18:30 latest since everything closes early.

Nakanojo is an amazing area in Shima, giving access to several wonderul onsen and hiking opportunities. A quiet spot that is perfect to relax and enjoy the spa baths. It is a beautfiul town high up in the moutains.

It is a beautfiul town high up in the moutains. The toursit part of town centres around the hot spring and the way it is lit these days makes it particularly beautiful at night. There are temples and parks to visit and some quaint little shops. You can stand and watch soba noodles being made by hand and then enjoy them for a very reasonable price. Walk up the hill and around the none touristy parts of town. there are some great family run restaurants serving delicous food at prices the locals pay. Apart from the soba place which is in the toursity part of twon, restaurants in that area are pretty expensive. It gets cold, quite cold, down to -5c in January during my stay. Be aware that getting in and out of the town is via limited timetabled train and bus. Unless you are there for the skiing, get in early in the morning, stay 1 night and get out the next afternoon.

While waiting for the shuttle bus to pick us up in Jomo Kogen, we got suggestion from the lady officer in Information Center to visit Tsukiyono garden. We came in mid April 2025 and there are still a lot of sakura. whereever you shoot your camera, the result of the photo is amazing. there is also a small grocery that serve udon/ramen as well. I bought a watermelon in that grocery and the lady in Udon stall lend me her knife to cut it. the watermelon is very small, compared to what I used to eat in Indonesia, but this minakami watermelon is very juicy and its flesh is so thick yet tender.

Amazing picturesque location! Mineral water was natural and wonderful. Be prepared to sleep on a futon on the floor, but other than that very comfortable. People are very nice anyways in Japan, but the staff here was particularly helpful and accommodating. Free shuttle bus from Jomo-Kogen was a real plus which enabled us to get there from Tokyo via Shinkansen. Wish we could have stayed longer!
