- Scored out of 10, guest rating 7.8Good - What previous guests thought, 87 reviewsExcellent breakfast and dinners, far beyond our expectations. Shabu shabu, sashimi, sushi galore etc amongst a wide variety of food to suit most taste for buffet dinner, plus complimentary non-alcoholic and alcoholic drinks, wine, beer, sake, japanese whisky and brandy at dinner plus in the lounge after dinner. Quiet and serene surroundings despite near to a road, opposite Lawson and near to gas station. V convenient for driving to the tourist sites in Mt Aso. Room is a bit worn out but clean and big for Japanese standards. No wonder it was crowded. Great value for money.Guest review byShu-LeongHong Kong
- From US$136.22 per nightScored out of 10, guest rating 8.8Fabulous - What previous guests thought, 354 reviewsThis stay was really amazing. The owners are the sweetest ! We didn't have a car, so they drove us to the village for Onsen and groceries, and gave us great advice. We just had to take a taxi back, and enjoy our time at the huge and well-furnished cottage. The bathroom is amazing, and you can even privatize Mori's cottage's Onsen. Mori no cottage goes above and beyond. Thank you so much!Guest review byLauraNew Zealand

Quality and offerings of food were great. The place also has 2 onsens with mountain / caldera views which were so peaceful in the morning! And another one with an outdoor space. Finally, I loved the Showa era retro vibes.Guest review byAnelaUnited States

Yuhoen Fruit Farm to enjoy fruit picking and unlimited serving of fruits picked within an hour. There were Hosui pears, Kyoho and Fuji Minori grapes. Great experience! Kumamoto castle is a must visit as well as to savour horse sashimi.Guest review byEricSingapore - 10.0

The visit to Mount Aso and walking there is a great experience and the bus from Aso railway station up to the volcano makes the visit easy. A bit too many people at the crater but fortunately less on th longer hike.Guest review byVladimírCzech Republic - 8.0

Getting around is easiest with a car, but note that it's a small mountain town so roads can be narrow--a smaller rental car would be a good choice for visiting tourists. There's not a lot of convenience shops but local produce is glorious and cheap. You can do many hiking/walking daytrips based here into the Kuju mountains and Aso area. We visited in spring, so roads were clear but I'm not sure how conditions would be in winter.Guest review byAnonymous - 10.0

The owners were exceptionally lovely, I arrived when it was a bit dark, but she quickly responded to my message about my arrival and helped me get to the property. Also their generosity and kindness were amazing despite me being a little lost in my Japanese understanding. Stay was comfortable with a great view of the mountains greeting you as you woke up. I would definitely recommend staying here, probably arriving a little before the sun sets as the small streets can be a little confusing if you take the wrong route.Guest review byAndrewAustralia - 8.0
Amakusa is a beautiful place. There isn't much going on.
Amakusa is a beautiful place. There isn't much going on. Even many restaurants were closed much of the time I was there. This is a good place if you like nature. You would also need a car to get around, things are too spread out to walk.Guest review byJohnUnited States - 8.0
Kumamoto city - not much to see.
Kumamoto city - not much to see. Aso area - nicer - with views, countryside and waterfalls. Accessible only by car so suggest self drive. Treat places like US where you need to drive everywhere to get stuffs. I don't put photos because need to convert to jpg.Guest review byArundataTaiwan - 10.0
Great views. Great trip.
Great views. Great trip. Only disappointment is the blue "lake" in Nakadake Crater. All the pictures show the "lake" while to my understanding it was destroyed during the 2016 earthquake. It was what drawn my attention to this location to begin with, so it was disappointing not seeing it. All these pictures should be replaced with what currently is there, not what used to be there.Guest review byAnonymousUnited States - 10.0

This small town was very tranquil and relaxing with many hot spring baths available to experience and enjoy. Easy to walk around and visit the many small shops in the town. The Okyakuya Inn, which I stayed at, was perfect with a traditional tatami room and futons and both dinner and breakfast course meals were delicious serving dishes made with local ingredients. The staff were also great and friendly.Guest review byTomokoCanada - 6.0

Other than the castle area, there isn't much to see in Kumamoto itself. But if you enjoy nature, the city is a pretty good jumping off point for visiting areas such as the Aso caldera and the Takachiho Gorge area.Guest review byTomJapan - 8.0

What I like most is the countryside surrounding and nice peoples. What I may want the area to improve is/are : more shops, don't close so early, if possible, pls get one convenient store, and lastly roads are very narrow, so driver must be careful.Guest review byWai LokSingapore
