- From £114.94 per nightScored out of 10, guest rating 9.2Superb - What previous guests thought, 439 reviews1/ easy to contact by messages. Very reactive. 2/ WE were transported by car from the station (200m walk) very convenient when you have many luggages. 3/ you feel special from the start to the finish. The personnel were very classy, helpful, polite. 4/ We had the suite with the private onsen. It was a surprise to discover also a private sauna and massage chair. The luxuary in that room is incredible. Worth every yen (and we are not the kind of people that spend much on hotels, it was a luxuary that we granted ourselves for a special occasion and it made it very special) 5/ the breakfast Is top class japanese cuisine 6/ i recommand getting thé dinner (full kaiseki course). Master class delights. We had a proper private dining room for ourselves (i think included with the suit). 7/ the private onsen... Excellent with a good view. 8/ yudanaka IS a very nice villageGuest review byMokhlesTunisia
- From £185.43 per nightScored out of 10, guest rating 9.3Superb - What previous guests thought, 671 reviewsEverything was truly exceptional. The room was clean and spacious, with everything you might need. The staff was very polite and helpful. There is an option to reserve a private onsen for an additional charge, but we used public baths and found that in less busy times (during the day and in the morning) we had the onsen to ourselves. There are baths both inside and outside, the experience in all of them was great. If you have the means, we suggest booking a kaiseki dinner and traditional breakfast. They truly added to our experience. There were transfer options for pick-up from the station to the hotel and back +they can take you to the Snow Monkey Park in the morning. Getting there from Nagano station was extremely easy.Guest review byDariaRussia
- From £99.81 per nightScored out of 10, guest rating 9.2Superb - What previous guests thought, 246 reviewsThis was an amazing onsen house. Located very close to the JR terminal station (3 min walk). The open air onsen is superb and we have enjoyed every single minute inside. The room is super spacious - I would even say the biggest we have ever had during our stay in Japan - you get free mochi, hot water, green tee ingredients every day. They even replaced the linens and towels after 1 night. The staff is very nice and helpful. They called a gas station for me, which charged us more than they should. There is an attached parking lot for free. The whole accommodation is a traditional onsen house with tatami floor. The stay was very nice and enjoyable. And not only due to the superb onsen inside. I highly recommend this!Guest review byTomasCzech Republic
- From £88.72 per nightScored out of 10, guest rating 7.4Good - What previous guests thought, 169 reviewsThe room was much bigger than I anticipated, and in a Japanese style (with tatami) so I was pleasantly surprised. The onsen in the hotel was an absolute delight. It had several baths with different temperatures, a lounge space, a sauna, a cold bath (which can be rare), and of course everything needed to wash yourself thoroughly before going into the baths. The hotel also provides body towels as well as face towels, so you don't need to bring yours. They have lockers to keep your items safe while bathing. There's free breakfast (little pieces of bread + some juice and coffee/tea) and a space on the first floor to relax after the onsen for example. It has wifi there as well.Guest review byAntheaJapan
- Scored out of 10, guest rating 9.0Superb - What previous guests thought, 207 reviewsGreat hotel with fabulous onsen (both the room/private and the hotel guests onsen). Spacious and clean room and wonderful roof top bar experience. Staff at dinner, breakfast and at the roof top were an absolute dream of kindness and professionalism. During the private dinner the chef came to prepare the sushi by our table which was incredible. The food was absolutely exquisite using local produce and prepared and presented with such a delicacy as I've never seen before! What a treat! Walking distance from the station but possible to get a ride from the hotel (need to ask them in advance). A great place to stay!Guest review byAlexandraSwitzerland
- From £160.31 per nightScored out of 10, guest rating 9.2Superb - What previous guests thought, 44 reviewsThe lounge is absolutely the highlight, here the Grand Phenix shares three things with you: great local draft beer, a gentle Okushiga snowing view, and a warm firepit. This lounge is so special that you can wait for your dinner table (because of the tight reservation in Christmas season) there while drinking your drinks by a bonfire, this even makes waiting a wonderful experience...Guest review byTeddypicnicChina

For a tourist location, it was hard to find restaurants open, or willing to seat us (a party of five). But in general the food was good and the location was great for hot springs and access to the snow monkey park.Guest review byTimUnited States - 8.0
I think I would have stayed a little longer (than 3 nights)...
I think I would have stayed a little longer (than 3 nights) to take advantage of the skiing and the onsen's (alternate between the two!), to relax for longer in the Japanese countryside. (I did not come to Japan to just check off the tourist sites...) The town has narrow streets to walk on, even without gps you cannot get lost as it is more or less parallel to the river, especially the more tourist section with all the onsens.Guest review byChristine SoonCanada - 10.0

The Onsen hot springs experience was unique and for anyone wanting to see how the Japanese hold this aspect of their beliefs in such high regard this area is a perfect example and for a couple of days you can immerse yourself in a different cultural and culinary experience that will be the highlight of your holiday and the truest insight of this unique way of life.Guest review byHelen SUnited Kingdom - 10.0
Great little town as a base for seeing the amazing snow...
Great little town as a base for seeing the amazing snow monkeys. The walk to the monkeys was very pleasant (but it is advisable to wear wellingtons as it is very mucky). There are many small Ryokans in the town - sadly all of varying standards. Our recommended one was Tsuyuru Ryokan. Great little place run by the amazing Yoko.Guest review byFionaSouth Africa
