The Onsen set up is lovely, the newly renovated rooms are very nice, the staff are extremely helpful, there is drinks and some snacks offered in lobby seating area before dinner and then at supper/9pm which we loved, you need a car if you want to explore the area which is really beautiful, we didn’t have breakfast or dinner as felt it was a bit pricey but it smelt and looked amazing instead we loved exploring small local country eat places 😊

The welcome of our host was great. Outside there is a little playground for kids which our 1.5year old loved of course. The property is very clean, rooms are big and there is a big common area. The onsen are remarkable as well, super clean and practical. We were able to hike in the trails nearby but we needed a car lift to get to the trails of course. Our host recommended us a super nice restaurant on our first day and we also are very well for dinner in the restaurants of the area. One near the Kombachizawa station known for Yakitori and one further away, about 15min by car which is a Thai restaurant.

Hokuto is a bit of an off-the-beaten-track destination,...

Hokuto is a bit of an off-the-beaten-track destination, perfect for a weekend or even 3 or four days. Surrounded by beautiful nature, it's a great place for hikers - since it's located at the base of the Yatsugatake mountain range. The adventurers can go explore the hiking trails and waterfalls, but also there are charming cafes, art galleries and international cuisine restaurants splattered in the area. I would avoid going there by car on a Saturday morning, because the Chuo Express Road gets packed and it may take up to six hours to get there from Tokyo (the normal is 2 hours). So if you can, go on a weekday.
