The hotel is set in a romantic garden of coconut palms and has a clean swimming pool big enough to take a few swimming strokes and relax aching legs after a day exploring pagodas and archaeological remains. The room was spacious, nicely decorated, clean, as was the bathroom. The staff is very friendly and tries to ensure a pleasant stay for the guests. There is also a restaurant in the garden, which serves very good breakfast and dinner. We would definitely come back.

We had a brilliant stay in Lion Gate Hotel! Everyone working there was so kind, friendly and helpful. We had the traditional breakfast in the morning which we really enjoyed. The hotel is a very short tuktuk ride from everything you could want to see and do. We also enjoyed spending time at the pool which was very well maintained.

We chose not to climb Sigiriya (having just recovered from Adam's Peak!) but instead chose the much shorter Pidurangala which afforded a fabulous view of Sigiriya. Highly recommended. A visit to the Bawa hotel, Heritance Kandalama, is well worth it as an insight into the brilliant architectural mind of Geoffrey Bawa.

The ancient city of Polonnaruwa has a lot to offer to the tourists who want to know about the history of Sri Lanka. It has so many ruins and monuments to view, and especially marvel at the stone crafting abilities of ancient Sri Lankans who have created so many buddhist states and artistic monuments by using rocks. Definitely a trip to add to your bucket list.

A beautiful place on earth that there are lots of 360 degree view points. But if it rains it will ruin your plans. So make sure you depend on weatherly and visit Matale when it shows many continuous sunny days. Even on cloudy forecasts do not visit as all mointain tops then will be covered and you will not see the sights. when it is humid leaches also will be active and will become a painful experience.

Kandy is a city that wraps you in a gentle embrace from the moment you arrive. Its people are warm, genuine, and respectful, always ready to greet you with a smile and extend a helping hand. The air is fresh and cool, carrying the scent of hills and flowers, while the weather shifts softly between sunshine and mist. The cuisine is a delightful blend of tradition and flavor, from fragrant curries to freshly brewed tea, each bite telling a story of its rich culture. Here, honesty feels natural, safety is never in question, and respect for one another is a way of life. Kandy is not just a place you visit—it’s a feeling you carry home.

Sigiriya is stunning and has a lovely village charm to it, compared to the tourist/backpacker mecca that is Ella. There are plenty of restaurants and bars to choose from but it somehow doesn't detract and Sigiriya still feels very local and true to SL values.

Anuradhapura, one of the world's oldest continuously...

Anuradhapura, one of the world's oldest continuously inhabited cities, is a treasure trove of ancient history that stretches back to the 4th century BCE. Established by King Pandukabhaya, it served as the majestic capital of Sri Lanka for over a millennium, playing a pivotal role in the island's Buddhist heritage and cultural evolution. The arrival of Buddhism in Sri Lanka, introduced by Mahinda Thera in the 3rd century BCE, marked a transformative era for Anuradhapura. This led to the creation of awe-inspiring stupas, monastic complexes, and elaborate water reservoirs that showcase the ingenuity of the time. Central to this transformation is the revered Sri Maha Bodhi tree, a sapling believed to have been taken from the very tree under which the Buddha attained enlightenment, which continues to be a powerful pilgrimage site. Anuradhapura flourished as a vibrant hub of trade, culture, and religion. Its stunning architecture, exemplified by monumental structures like the Ruwanwelisaya and the Jetavanaramaya, reflects the extraordinary vision and craftsmanship of its builders—each stone telling a story of devotion, power, and artistry. Despite facing invasions and natural calamities that eventually led to its decline in the 10th century CE, Anuradhapura's legacy endured. The capital shifted to Polonnaruwa, but Anuradhapura remained a beacon of historical significance, earning its status as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Today, it captivates scholars and travelers alike, offering a glimpse into Sri Lanka's rich cultural lineage and inviting exploration of its ancient ruins, sacred sites, and the profound stories embedded within them. Anuradhapura is not just a city; it’s a living testament to the resilience and depth of a civilization that continues to inspire.
