- From £93.92 per nightScored out of 10, guest rating 9.0Superb - What previous guests thought, 199 reviewsUpon hearing about the prospect of staying at Lochmara Lodge upon arrival at Picton from North Island, we jumped at the opportunity. Definitely no regrets, as although the lodge is not high end, everything else makes up for it. This was one of our top highlight stays across 5 weeks in New Zealand! We felt so welcomed by staff, before and during our stay! Prior to booking, all questions, including transport via water taxi, were quickly and diligently answered. Upon arrival at the water taxi, we were warmly greeted and helped by staff to ensure a swift check-in ahead of schedule, and the same was experienced upon arrival. The place is set deep in the Marlborough Sounds, and it offered the most amazing scenery and nature all around. It was breathtaking, especially as the sun set and first thing in the morning. The fact that it cannot be reached by car made it extra special and unique. We had two rooms, one water facing and one facing the back-end (this room was perhaps a bit sad). The room was small, quite simple but we did not spend much time inside, as there was so much else to do! We loved the chill and vibe of the place, and the level of activities available to us during our stay. We did hiking, the feeding time activities with the pigs, goats, birds etc on site (we loved the insight provided with all), kayaking, paddle boarding, the games and general relaxation. We also visited the underwater observatory - which was super interesting - and great interaction and insight into the creatures of the New Zealand waters. The restaurant offered an all-day service, including breakfast and dinner for us overnight house guests. The staff was always friendly and welcoming, and the food and drinks were of a high quality. I think we could have easily done a third night at this place, and it provided such a great introduction to what more to come during our time on the South Island.Guest review byI JSingapore

Stunning views down the harbour and plenty of eateries and accommodation options. We ate at Cortado twice as we could take our Labrador inside & they had a fab dog menu! A beautiful drive across to Anakiwa. We’ll definately stay longer next time.Guest review byPatriciaNew Zealand - 10.0

I loved the remoteness of where we stayed, yet the sense of being safe and looked after by the locals. The views and natural environment are sublime. The only permitted way to get here is currently by boat as the road has been damaged by a storm and is only allowed to be used by residents' and service vehicles. This makes it very safe to walk up the road to tracks into the wonderlands the area has to offer. The walks vary from fairly easy to somewhat taxing. Some of the tracks have a challenging gradient if you are not used to walking, and would be more difficult if they are wet. Having said that, we are 'senior citizens' with average fitness and we managed to summit the Onahau lookout (416 meters / 1368 feet) above sea level) and return in one piece.Guest review byTomNew Zealand - 10.0

Picton is a lovely place to spend a few days.. or explore further. Irish pub up the road was good for a drink. Mostly did our own cooking but nice cafes around the corner for lunch. Handy bus stop across the road. Went to Blenheim for a day ( check the timetable.. doesn’t go every day) Walked to Waikawa Bay and back. Edwin Fox museum worth going to as was the Mail Run cruise. We stayed for 3 nights… arriving from Wellington by ferry… and leaving by bus for Christchurch.Guest review byDianeNew Zealand - 10.0

The peaceful environment and the time to relax in beautiful surroundings. Lovely environment to just chill out and away from stress. Take a tour with Phil through the sounds on his boat. Sports massage with Julie is awesome too.Guest review byKarenNew Zealand - 10.0
Lots to do and see. Recommend the Edwin Fox museum.
Lots to do and see. Recommend the Edwin Fox museum. Wine tours close by. Ferry port so always busy, Great selection of shops and eateries. Make sure you stop and relax for a while and perhaps walk the hills and surrounds. Pity the gondola never happened for Picton. Would have been an asset for the town. You can still see the scoured tree scapeGuest review byJennyNew Zealand - 10.0
An unspoilt location to enjoy a break.
An unspoilt location to enjoy a break. The Marlborough Sounds are unique and it takes a little effort to get there, but well worth it to enjoy the tranquillity and all it offers. Lovely clear water to swim or other water sports. Excellent outdoor cafe for evening meal or you can self cater. Portage hotel is close by also had good food.Guest review byTrishNew Zealand
