- From £109.16 per nightScored out of 10, guest rating 8.9Fabulous - What previous guests thought, 373 reviewsSilence. This is the place to heal, love, sleep, and enjoy nature. It is also a place to feel grateful for all that we have. The staff is friendly and kind, and the location—perfectly situated in the middle of nowhere—is ideal for disconnecting from all electronic devices. The room (we were actually offered Casa Arminda) is exceptional: a balcony with chairs overlooking the landscape, and a small but convenient kitchen with a microwave and fridge, which were perfect for preparing our daily salads. Guests can book dinner in advance, as there are no regular meals, because this is a romantic getaway, not a hotel. Breakfast is excellent: dairy products, local bread and hams, jams, and orange juice. Activities at the location include cycling, swimming (the pool is lovely, though the water flows continuously, making it cold but refreshing!), and massages (available for an additional fee). You can also exchange books in the library and take walks around the area (make sure to bring comfortable shoes and clothing). Additionally, you can learn the art of "doing nothing," simply enjoying the beauty of nature. Why not? Finally, you can drink a fresh lemonade and eat a juicy apple near the pool, every single day!Guest review byLuisaPortugal
- From £71.19 per nightScored out of 10, guest rating 8.8Fabulous - What previous guests thought, 983 reviewsThe ambience is relaxed, perfect to recover from work stress. It has a really good family feel. The room was above my expectations as I didn't expect a little kitchen, a little table and chairs to eat at, or the additional bedroom for my daughter. The breakfast is excellent with a lot of choices and variety. The grounds are great for taking a walk, horse riding and swimming. There are adventure activities up in the trees for older kids and young adults. All the staff were exceptionally kind and nice. I particularly appreciated the kindness of the man in charge of horseriding towards my family on the horse rides. I hope to have the opportunity to return.Guest review byElizabethPortugal
- Scored out of 10, guest rating 9.6Exceptional - What previous guests thought, 238 reviewsOur stay at Casa do Rio was truly perfect, beginning with the exceptional service provided by Gonçalo and his team. From the moment we arrived, they made us feel special on our honeymoon. The location is breathtaking, and no photos can truly capture its beauty. The food at the restaurant was the best we’ve experienced in Portugal so far, and the wines offered a wonderful introduction to this remarkable wine region. We will definitely return at some point in our lives, as this place has carved out a special place in our hearts.Guest review byjockAustralia
- From £112.63 per nightScored out of 10, guest rating 9.4Superb - What previous guests thought, 53 reviewsReally beautiful houses, surrounded by a well preserved property, in a small and cosy village. The house was extremely clean, was warm when we checked in, and the host was super friendly. We really enjoyed our stay, and despite the rain, we were able to visit the surroundings, and gave a pleasant walk to the nearby river and beach facilities through the nature paths.Guest review byAlexandrePortugal

Guarda is a city where history and hospitality intertwine...
Guarda is a city where history and hospitality intertwine beneath the vast Portuguese sky. From the moment of arrival, the warmth and kindness of its people shine, making each encounter memorable. The city’s compact layout is perfect for wandering, though the hills reward every step with breathtaking views. The cathedral stands at Guarda’s heart, with its towers offering sweeping vistas over red rooftops and winding alleys. Nearby, the castle and medieval tower are silent keepers of centuries gone by, each providing a unique perspective of the land below. If time permitted, the wild peaks of Serra da Estrela would beckon nature lovers and hikers with their rugged beauty and scenic trails—a promise for another day. Evenings bring culinary delight: Simple.Guarda offers outstanding Italian cuisine, while charming cafes invite guests to linger over coffee and pastries. Shops and markets bustle with life, from tempting kitchen stores to fragrant flowers and perfectly ripe fruit. The ancient, winding streets—paved with time-worn stones—invite exploration, each turn revealing new surprises like parks, a chocolatier, and inviting squares. Our visit felt all too brief. As we left, Guarda remained with us—a city to savor, to wander, and to remember fondly for its gentle magic and the warmth of its people.Guest review byPhyllis - 10.0

Great base to visit the Serra de Estrela national park , plenty of nature trails to walk and lots of sites to see . Restaurant places can be hard to find at times , i did end up with a pot noodle in my room one night ( a saturday night on along bank holiday weekend ) as we couldn´t get in a restaurant anywhere .Guest review byStephen G HodgsonPortugal - 10.0

The region is famous for the prehistorick art on rocks depicting animals 20,000 or more years ago, but there is also a profusion of medieval castles around and cultural sites. For lovers of good wine it is also an excellent visit, the north style of food is marvellous and all is very quiet. Some roads are a bit narrow if you want to go to remote pleces... I suggest to visit with time and go visit the small places, enjoy the quiet, the occasional wild animals, and take some time to hear the local people's stories.Guest review byWanderingwonderPortugal - 10.0

Celorico da Beira is a beautiful, quiet village with many hiking trails. The area is extremely safe as is most all of Portugal and the locals are very friendly to those visiting. Highly recommend this area if you like hiking, want to be away from the stress and busyness of life, and just want to get away for some peace and quiet with beautiful scenery around you.Guest review byQuinnPortugal - 10.0

Trancos is an ancient walled town set high up on a granite plateau, A wonderful base for hiking on the Aldeas Historicas paths and and having more than its full share of excellent restaurants. Don't expect lively evenings in street cafes, this is a small rural town which is trying to get on the tourist map. It is also a good stopping off point for a number of boulder castle villages in the district.Guest review byDavidUnited Kingdom - 10.0

As I already said, Almeida is a 17/18 century fortified place, a candidate to UNESCO's World Heritage, together with other Portuguese places. As a result many facilities, like the Military Museum and the centre of investigation of fortified places, were created as well as addicional touristic support. There are several restaurants out side the wall, which provide generally Portuguese traditonal dishes, specially the bacalhão, cod fish, and sometimes goat and lamb. If you enter in the centre of Portugal coming from Spain, Fuentes de Onõro / Vilar Formoso it's only 10 km away, so don't miss it.Guest review byMathiasPortugal - 10.0

Loriga is a gorgeous town, not unlike many in the area of the Serra da Estrela. What sets it apart is a great river beach (praia fluvial); its closeness to the Parque da Serra da Estrela, an easy 20-minute drive; and it's less busy than other more popular towns. Driving through Loriga's streets can be a daunting experience if you are not used to very narrow streets and steep slopes. If you plan on staying try to find lodging close to the main road.Guest review byFidelPortugal - 8.0
