FAQs about hotels in Norte Region
The Essence of Portugal
With fabulous beaches stretching from Caminha by the Spanish border to just south of Espinho, Portugal’s Norte region is known for beautiful scenery and historic cities.
Most Norte hotels on Booking.com are in its UNESCO World Heritage-listed capital Porto (or Oporto). Attractively spread over hills, it has wine cellars storing port from the Douro River Valley vineyards upstream.
Voted one of Portugal’s most liveable cities, Vila Real has the Mateus house overlooking a peaceful pond. Guimarães boasts a UNESCO World Heritage-listed historical centre and is known as the ‘birthplace of the Portugal’. Its stately castle and the Palace of the Dukes of Bragança are well worth a visit.
Bragança itself is by Montesinho Natural Park in north-east Norte, and a keep remains from its former castle. Chaves also has a castle keep and a Roman stone bridge, but unlike Braga, it no longer has remains of its Roman baths, erected over hot springs. Braga’s crowning glory is the Bom Jesus do Monte sanctuary, set high in hills, with a wonderful staircase and garden overlooking the city.
South of Galicia is the beautiful Peneda-Gerês area, Portugal’s only national park, and to its west is Viana do Castelo with its Norte beach hotels set on Blue Flag beaches. Also noteworthy is impressive Basilica de Santa Luzia, surveying the riverfront town below.

- From US$468.20 per nightScored out of 10, guest rating 9.3Superb - What previous guests thought, 473 reviewsPeople are very nice and helpful. We arrived in the middle of the night (around 03:45) due to flight trouble and they left us instructions for pick-up of keys. We really appreciated the offered solutions. Thanks Ernani. Our luggage arrived 2 days later and they received them on our absence. Perfect! There are around 10 or 12 small bungalows, arranged internally like apartments, with terraces and outrageous views over the valley. There are modern kitchen equipment, with induction hearth, stove, dish washer and also some pans. If you are a cook you will miss some pans and additional equipment like mixers, but for usual cooking it is sufficient. There is a heated internal pool, very nice as we stayed 5 days in autumn and had a lot of rain, wind and low temperatures. Head caps are required and can be bought on reception for 4 € each. We had our breakfast included. During the days where there were enough guests, rich and varied options were available. As people got reduced, they asked us at night before to choose food from a menu. No desperdice. Perfect! We didn't eat at restaurant, but it smelled very well during the initial days and they offer some nice combinations at a relatively high price level (this seems to be inherent to the region), but we are not really enabled to evaluate this point. Rooms were clean on arrival. In bathroom there is a heating device which allows hanging and drying of bath towels. Very nice as this small detail is often neglected at hotels. As the bungalows are placed on a steep hill, it is adequate more for a bit sporty people. Access by road is also steep but asphalted and reachable by standard vehicles. We are planning to return to Peneda-Gerês (under better weather conditions) and would certainly consider to stay at Pousadela again.Guest review byJames Tiberius KirkGermany

The staff went the extra mile in terms of small things that make a really big difference, from a complimentary glass of bubbly on arrival, to special shampoo and shower gel for kids left by the bath for our two year old son! The location was beautiful and the food exquisite. We shall certainly be returning to Monverde.Guest review byNatashaUnited Kingdom

It is a wonderful city.
It is a wonderful city. Though there where some temporary constraints caused by the construction of a new metro line, but it was still easy and safe to move around the city. I enjoyed the city tour with a tuk-tuk and walking and jogging along the river. Shopping was also an easy and great experience. People were all cordial. FSGuest review byFranciscoMozambique - 8.0

Room had dated brown furniture , not enough space between bed and dressing table I stubbed my toes twice. No kettle with tea and coffee in the room . I didn’t like the body gel sachets in the bathroom . It all felt a bit penny pinching from the hotel , it cost enough to warrant a coffee and a generous amount of body wash in the shower. The hotel was quiet and we had a good sleep ,comfy bed ,nice blinds. The location was the best thing ,didn’t have breakfast because we left before 5AM.Guest review byThomas - 8.0
Beach at Esposende too difficult to swim in due to pepples.
Beach at Esposende too difficult to swim in due to pepples. Other beaches at Ofir and Apulia excellent. Limited supply of restaurants and limitless supply of banks!!! Surprised by the obvious wealth amongst the Portuguese people with holiday homes here. Very few estrangers. Not for sailors. Good for families. Some surprising sculptures dotted around the esplanade from 1997 one in particular near the San Lorenca fort at Esponsende.Guest review byRogerIreland - 10.0

Braganca has a proud and interesting history actively promoted by local businesses and officials. Unfortunately we arrived late on Saturday and left Monday so couldn’t explore the shopping scene. So we explored the surrounding national parks. Local cuisine is proudly meat based with very generous portions!Guest review byRitaAustralia
