We loved the raw beauty of the mountains, lakes and geologic features in the area. We didn't bring or rent bikes, but will the next time. Lee Vining is a cool small town with a vintage vibe. It has a couple of great casual restaurants, shops with local Yosemite / Eastern Sierra themed merchandise, fishing/hiking gear and a gas station. June Lake features some of the best fishing on the planet! From Lake fishing to creek and river fishing, there are a lot of choices. Additionally, the hiking is amazing, with entrances to the JMT and PCT with access to some amazing alpine lakes and sights. Don't expect Aspen Colorado! The last time I stayed in Mammoth Lakes/Old Mammoth was 20 years ago, and my, oh my, has the town changed significantly. From a very small, sleepy town to a hip-and-happening ski and sun [resort] town, Mammoth is beautiful and picturesque. . . where my family and I stayed was very quiet and serene. Note: if you stay closer by the main streets, you'll obviously hear vehicles zipping by. Personally, I like staying by the mountains where there are brooks and streams within walking distance. We arrived on the Sunday before Memorial Day and stayed a few days after. What a difference! Once the Monday/Memorial Day hit, all the weekend warriors left except for the locals. It was GREAT because we seemed to have the whole town to ourselves. . . biking, hiking, and a leisurely Yosemite road trip. What a great time we had! Visited Mammoth Lakes since I was 10.
Visited Mammoth Lakes since I was 10. Learned to ski on Mammoth Mountain and have since many times. The city is full of shopping and eateries. Several good hotels. Biking and fishing dominates summer. Many, many camping sites available. Have stayed at Mammoth Mountain RV resort many times. Highly recommended. Great fishing lakes. The town is named after a grouping of lakes near and above it. Each with great fishing. Short 25 minute drive to Lake Crowley, nationally known for it's trout fishery and scenery and Convict Lake (pictured), amongst others.Guest review byAnonymous - 8.0

Great town to visit anytime, though getting here in winter is sometimes perilous, and most of the town shuts down. There are a plethora of activities to do Spring thru Fall...hiking, biking, kayaking, exploring via vehicle, with Yosemite close enough for day trips. In Spring and Summer, a birder's paradise...bring a spotting scope!. Options narrow in Winter, but still plenty of basin, birds, beaches, and craters to explore. Mono Lake Committee store/visitor's center provides a wealth of info, as does the official Mono Lake Visitor's center.
