Read more– opens a dialog boxEach review score is between 1 and 10. To get the overall score you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of them. We use a weighted review system, which means the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. Guests can also give separate “subscores” in crucial areas like location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value, and free Wifi. Note that guests submit their subscores and overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an accommodation that you booked through our platform if you stayed there, or if you got to the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialize in detecting fake reviews submitted to our platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team so that our fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we'd publish every review we get, positive and negative. However, we won’t display any reviews that include or refer to (among other things):
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out. We may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old, or if the accommodation has a change of ownership.
An accommodation can reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (e.g. language, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). You can sort and/or filter them by time of year, review score, and more.
Sometimes we show external review scores from other well-known travel websites, but make it clear when we do this.
These guidelines and standards aim to keep the content on Booking.com relevant and family-friendly, without limiting expression or strong opinions. They're also applicable regardless of the comment's tone.
Contributions should be travel related. The most helpful contributions are detailed and help others make better decisions. Please don’t include personal, political, ethical, or religious commentary. Promotional content will be removed and issues concerning Booking.com’s services should be routed to our Customer Service or Accommodation Service teams.
Contributions should be appropriate for a global audience. Please avoid using profanity or attempts to approximate profanity with creative spelling, in any language. Comments and media that include hate speech, discriminatory remarks, threats, sexually explicit remarks, violence, or the promotion of illegal activity are not permitted.
All content should be genuine and unique to the guest. Reviews are most valuable when they are original and unbiased. Your contribution should be yours. Booking.com property partners should not post on behalf of guests or offer incentives in exchange for reviews. Attempts to bring down the rating of a competitor by submitting a negative review will not be tolerated.
Respect the privacy of others. Booking.com will make an effort to obscure email addresses, telephone numbers, website addresses, social media accounts, and other similar details.
The opinions expressed in contributions are those of Booking.com customers and properties, and not of Booking.com. Booking.com does not accept responsibility or liability for any reviews or responses. Booking.com is a distributor (without any obligation to verify) and not a publisher of these comments and responses.
By default, reviews are sorted based on the date of the review and on additional criteria to display the most relevant reviews, including but not limited to: your language, reviews with text, and non-anonymous reviews. Additional sorting options might be available (by type of traveler, by score, etc...).

SlovakiaThe room was full of space, good and clean shared spaces, great location. It was little bit cold inside but we visit in winter and every place in Melbourne is cold inside this time

New ZealandThe only complaint I have is perhaps the bed - I had no issues with it, but for some people it may be a tad on the thin side? Would also depend on length of stay. An easy and cheap fix would be if the propery got a memory-foam mattress topper (or something similar) for each bed/room.
Overall not a bad place to stay in the slightest - I initially had my reservations due to seeing all the "if you do X you could be fined" stuff on the listing and so when I arrived I wondered if it would be one of those places that's trying to find reasons to get more money out of you. Turns out it's the complete opposite - the staff are actually super nice and helpful, and it's a really relaxed place to stay. Bathrooms were clean and the showers were nice, and my room was also not too bad either with a bed, desk and chair. There's central heating upstairs so it shouldn't get too cold - I got a little sick while I was in Melbourne and so asked for a heater and the guy working there was happy to help :) Location wise, the 96 Tram stops literally right outside so it's easy to get to the CBD. There's also a park across the road, and overall the area is really nice. I'd definitely stay again!

Reasonable price.Excellent location for access to bars, cafes, restaurants in Brunswick / Fitzroy as well as CBD. Room was basic but essentially decent. Friendly and helpful staff. Other guests were polite and considerate.

AustraliaBeing asked what could've been better: just a few small offerings since you ask: 1. pool table is loud - can be hard to hear TV without turning it up loudly which I hadn't wanted to do so as to avoid disturbing staff. 2. Though they were responsive, reassuring and generously shared things like TV use, it felt confusing at times knowing when to disturb staff, when they might be on or needing a break from guests or were listening to their headphones, or when I could ask to watch something on the TV. I didn't want to overly disturb them or take away from their use of the house also. In that sense I guess I possibly need to understood this as a house-share rather than guest accommodation perhaps(?); 3. The house is large and felt on the cold side at times. I heard other guests say they were cold. Admittedly, it was a cold week and Melbourne is expected to be cold, and I did wear warm clothing but it would be nice if the heating was increased by one further degree on colder nights to allow for the draughty old building and necessarily open windows in parts, etc., but I can also understand if it is hard to balance the heating in the building for everyone. Not a biggie because it's budget accom and staff offerred suggestions for warmth my room at least, which helped; 4. I feel like it might be nice for staff to have their own little comfy room to hang out in at times to get a moment of space to themself, to choose the TV programme they may want in their dinner break, etc. I do not know anything about their conditions but I just felt like whilst it was thoroughly excellent to have them around, I also just hoped that they have somewhere else to go sometimes as a place to retreat from potentially 24/7 distraction by guests! 5. Tiny thing easily fixed: I was surprised by was a couple of mornings there were either no tea towels at all in the kitchen or no fresh ones. 6. Craved a deep clean (mop) of my bedroom floor from day one, but got used to it quickly!
Surprisingly comfy bed and quality doona. Loved the sky view window in my room and its helpful and pretty quiet location near amenities. Cleanest most comfortable hostel kitchen you'll find. Main areas very clean. Friendly kind staff took pride in their work, seemed always helpful, often happy to connect, help out with local sightseeing/activity suggestions and were responsive to needs (e.g., when I and another guest felt a little cold). Went out of their way at times. Staff appear available most hours of the day, so I just hope that whatever their pay and conditions may be, their management compensate staff well for their responsive hospitality! You only had to approach them kindly for any of your needs and they were happy to help. Outstanding service from Byron and Alan. Laundry service super handy. Diversity of guests fabulous. Great facilities: comfy dining and lounge areas - large enough for many guests -smart TV with options for streaming films, music, etc. Location thoroughly excellent, beautiful, and also right at tram stop. Thank you to the hosts for great conversations and a great stay.

AustraliaAs a pensioner I understand value for money in the very close proximity to the Melbourne CDB, so this is just a fact for me, shared toilet / bathroom early morning can test your bladder, but I was aware of that.
The staff were very accommodating, friendly, easy 2 talk to, would do their best 2 assist you with any requirements, but most importantly understand your circumstances & offer above & beyond assistance to get you through your tough times.

AustraliaShared Bathroom & WC upstairs, meant you had to wait your turn, for these vital utilities in the morning. And the very squeaky original floor boards in the main entrance & upstairs landing / passageway noise, felt guilty that I may wake the other residence when arriving back at the accommodation late at night.
The super friendly on-site attendants made the stay very enjoyable. Al, Mitch, Byron, etc and for personal reasons, the accommodation was less than 1 km away from my wife's hospital bed.

AustraliaThe showers weren't cleaned daily, nor were the shower mats replaced. Since the room was outside the smokers area, it wasn't pleasant to have the window open for air becuase it smelt like cigaretts.
Very friendly staff that were accommodating of our late check-in. We booked the family room (room #1) and it was very spatious and the beds very comfortable. However, if you are a non-smoker or light sleeper I'd suggest you book a different room. Such a convenient location being close to the city and right by a tram stop. The vibe of this palce is a long term hostel mixed with the occassional short stay tourist. The building is very beauitful, heritage listed, and the staff explained its varied history - a cool place to stay!

AustraliaPillows on bed were pretty average. A few of the other people staying there were a little loud at night, but no fault of the staff/ provider.
Excellent location right near the main areas on Fitzroy and Carlton. Carlton gardens right across the road and the tram stop right outside. Rooms are very basic but have everything you need for a simple stay. Very good value for money and staff were nice and helpful. Would stay again for sure.
