How guest reviews work
Each review score is between 1-10. To get the overall score that you see, we add up all the review scores we’ve received and divide that total by the number of review scores we’ve received. We use a weighted review system which means that the more recent the review, the bigger the impact on the total review score calculation. In addition, guests can give separate ‘subscores’ in crucial areas, such as location, cleanliness, staff, comfort, facilities, value for money and free Wi-Fi. Note that guests submit their subscores and their overall scores independently, so there’s no direct link between them.
You can review an Accommodation that you booked through our Platform if you stayed there or if you arrived at the property but didn’t actually stay there. To edit a review you’ve already submitted, please contact our Customer Service team.
We have people and automated systems that specialise in detecting fake reviews submitted to our Platform. If we find any, we delete them and, if necessary, take action against whoever is responsible.
Anyone else who spots something suspicious can always report it to our Customer Service team, so our Fraud team can investigate.
Ideally, we would publish every review we receive, whether positive or negative. However, we won’t display any review that includes or refers to (among other things):
- Politically sensitive comments
- Promotional content
- Illegal activities
- Personal or sensitive information (e.g. emails, phone numbers or credit card info)
- Swear words, sexual references, hate speech, discriminatory remarks, threats, or references to violence
- Spam and fake content
- Animal cruelty
- Impersonation (e.g. if the writer is claiming to be someone else)
- Any violation of our review guidelines.
To make sure reviews are relevant, we may only accept reviews that are submitted within 3 months of checking out, and we may stop showing reviews once they’re 36 months old – or if the Accommodation has a change of ownership.
An Accommodation may choose to reply to a review.
When you see multiple reviews, the most recent ones will be at the top, subject to a few other factors (what language a review is in, whether it’s just a rating or contains comments as well, etc.). If you like, you can sort and/or filter them (by time of year, review score, etc.).
We sometimes show external review scores from other well-known travel websites. We make it clear when we’ve done this.
Guidelines and standards for Reviews
These guidelines and standards aim to keep the content on Booking.com relevant and family-friendly without limiting expression of strong opinions. They are also applicable regardless of the sentiment of the comment.
Contributions should be travel related. The most helpful contributions are detailed and help others make better decisions. Please don’t include personal, political, ethical, or religious commentary. Promotional content will be removed and issues concerning Booking.com’s services should be routed to our Customer Service or Accommodation Service teams.
Contributions should be appropriate for a global audience. Please avoid using profanity or attempts to approximate profanity with creative spelling, in any language. Comments and media that include 'hate speech', discriminatory remarks, threats, sexually explicit remarks, violence, and the promotion of illegal activity are not permitted.
All content should be genuine and unique to the guest. Reviews are most valuable when they are original and unbiased. Your contribution should be yours. Booking.com property partners should not post on behalf of guests or offer incentives in exchange for reviews. Attempts to bring down the rating of a competitor by submitting a negative review will not be tolerated.
Respect the privacy of others. Booking.com will make an effort to obscure email addresses, telephone numbers, website addresses, social media accounts, and similar details.
The opinions expressed in contributions are those of Booking.com customers and properties and not of Booking.com. Booking.com does not accept responsibility or liability for any reviews or responses. Booking.com is a distributor (without any obligation to verify) and not a publisher of these comments and responses.
By default, reviews are sorted based on the date of the review and on additional criteria to display the most relevant reviews, including but not limited to: your language, reviews with text, and non-anonymous reviews. Additional sorting options may be available (by type of traveller, by score, etc.).

Verified reviewIt was a privilege to stay in this centuries-old historic building. Full of quirky period features. The huge bed was super comfy. Location right opposite the castle is superb.
The ladder-like staircase to the bedroom was a bit awkward. Noise from the tram-line was a bit annoying until I got used to it - just wear earplugs and that solves the problem.

Verified reviewWonderful location. Cant get much better. The owner was super fast at replying when I asked a question.
Yes the stairs were very steep but simply just leave your large bags on the floor below.

Verified reviewThe location was fantastic. It was spacious, and they provided all the bits and bobs you could need. Extra toilet roll, shower gel, dishwasher tablets etc. which saves you buying when only staying a few nights. Having the castle outside the house was incredible.
I would say if you’re a light sleeper bring ear plugs, the trams are directly outside your door and continue into the early hours. Mosquito spray would be advisable to purchase if you know you’re tasty, I was eaten alive in bed.

Verified reviewThe house itself, the interior and the location. It’s so unique architecturally and location wise that it’s right in front of the famous castle. The host was sent a super useful info about the property, restaurant recommendation, and parking as well as driving info into Ghent.
Location as it was difficult to transport luggages from our parking location. It was also a little tricky to take the tram to connect to the Bruce station, but maybe there was a hack we or Google map didn’t know of. It could be an added info that the host could add to her welcome info letter.

Verified reviewLocation and general layout in each floor. Very clean, wide and comfortable bed, very efficient and smooth contact with operator.
The apartment is organized in 3.5 floors, imposing significant use of stairs, which is not explicitly mentioned in the property description. Access to the upper floor (sleeping room) made through a VERY steep stair, requiring extra care especially when coming down. This is not mentioned in the property description, barely possible to guess from the last photo there. I include here the photos showing the stairs.

Verified reviewThis is a sweet, quirky old house in a perfect location. We appreciated the space to store our bikes inside and also the washing machine. Perfect for our bike tour. The house is very well equipped including a dishwasher and lots of kitchen equipment
The house wasn't very well suited to being comfortable in the exceptionally hot temperatures we experienced. The location means it is noisy. Easily solved with earplugs

Verified reviewThis was an amazing location - reality is better than the photos! Amazing views of the castle and river from your bedroom window! Perfectly placed for any breaks you may need from the day. We were in Gent in an unusually hot period up to 35°! We were able to sleep in the apartment - keeping the shutters at the front of the house closed during the day helped a lot. Gent is a beautiful city great for a stay!

Verified reviewFirst off, the location is SPECTACULAR! Right across from the Gravensteen castle, it is in an incredible location. And you can walk to much of the city from here. The apartment itself is on multiple levels and has a surprising amount of space. It's in an historic building which appears to be over 250 years old. Again, very memorable. Lastly, the host was great at communication and seemed very nice.
A couple of relative minor things to note here. For one, the upstars bedroom is accessed via a very steep set of stairs/ladder that may not be suitable for all guests (particularly those who are older or have any mobility issues). Lastly (admittedly a minor quibble), for some reason the one shower lacks any sort of a shower curtain or privacy. This may cause some consternation for some and could be easily remedied by the host. Aside from this, the place was spectacular!

Verified reviewThe property is breathtaking and it is in an incredible location, so close to town but yet remarkably peaceful. Very close to great bars and restaurants with stunning views from the house windows of the castle. Lydia is a very generous host and left shower gel, towels, soap and everything we needed was at the house. The kitchen is very well equipped too.
Everything was incredible and Lydia was very helpful.

Verified reviewThe apartment is located in an old house with all windows looking to the medieval Gravensteen castle. It is spread on three levels , Kitcken and dinning , living and up in the attic the bedroom. It is decorated with historic and artistic flair but having all modern facilities the modern traveler might need ( including washer and dish washer). It was a beautiful surprise for a short vacation as was town Ghent itself .
Stairs up and down the apartment were challenging for us, travellers of a third age , but were part of the beauty of this location

Verified reviewWe were emailed a code several days prior to arrival. The door code worked perfectly.
The living areas were clean, but the walls and carpeting were showing signs of wear. But overall cleanliness was good. The stairs to top were steep, as stated by the owner so I just slept on sofa and was quite comfortable. It was really not a problem.
